An Open Letter To My High School Friend Group

Good friends don't let you do dumb things alone.

Friends.

High school memories are fun to reminisce on, especially the ones when we were all together in our small, claustrophobic AO office. We did the pep rallies, the fundraisers, the endless amounts of yearbook pictures, all the dances with endless pictures, and unforgettable nights together. Now, we have hours, and miles between us, but the times we get to spend together when we all head back home are always unforgettable. We live through each other's Facebooks, Twitters, Instagrams, and the endless/pointless Snapchat stories. It is nice to know that even though we all seemed to end up in different places we can still merge together and bring the squad back together for the short times we have at home.

Let's start off with a thank you.

Thank you for the endless bonfires, the random get-togethers, the excitement that comes when someone walks through the door you haven't seen in a couple months. The random text you get because something that happened during the day made you think of something funny they used to do. Thank you for helping me get through all my tough times, and letting me help you through yours. The miles mean nothing, because when we all get back together after a long semester nothing has seemed to change, other than the new memories we get to make.

I'm sorry.

I am sorry that sometimes I don't talk to you for weeks on end, but thank you for understanding that our lives get hectic and sometimes there's not enough time in the day, or week. I'm sorry that sometimes our conversations are all about me and I won't let you get a word in until you finally cut me off and yell, shut up! I'm sorry if you ever feel as if I took you for granted, if my words hurt more than I thought they would, or if I ever talked behind your back. And thank you for moving past all of that, and looking at the big picture, because, really, I could not imagine life without any of you!

I am so proud of you and will always be your cheerleader.

Even though we don't talk every day, I am always proud of you, and supporting you from afar. A Facebook post talking about something you accomplished makes me just as excited from 200 miles away. We are all doing such different things in life, and I find it so interesting to hear all the new updates and stories when we do have the time to catch up. It is amazing to see how far we've come, and even though I may not tell you enough I am so proud of each and every one of you for all that you've done this far and what you have yet to achieve in the future.

Our alumni group chat never fails to make me smile.

Whether it is the cheesy jokes, the inappropriate puns, the updates on our day, or pictures from then and now, you all never fail to make me laugh. Or when I ask a simple question and it is the topic for the next hour... Everything is a bit more complicated when we are all in one group chat, or even in one room. I really never know what to expect when it comes to a group chat.

Our friend group added individuals until we had every kind of crazy.

Our friend group has every type of individual you could think of. The nerds, the fashionista, the loudmouth, the one that swears after every other word, the one that always gets lost, the one that can't say no, the one that always comes late, the one that never seems to leave, and the one that says mind-blowing things that always seem to make sense in the end. And when you add us all together you get the wild/frisky type of nights.

Here are the thoughts/words that seem to explain us well from yours truly.

"Inspirational, accepting, forgiving, loving, funny as h*ll, everyone gives really good hugs, awesome bonfire makers, always down for an adventure, and really good party planners." -CG/JS

"We are a group of friends with the desire to lead brought together in high school to work towards making our school and ourselves better. We've traveled together, we have cried together and we have laughed together. For all intents and purposes we became a family that has a bond that will never be broken." -SG

"Everyone does their own thing and works and goes to school but then comes together when everyone's home." -TS

We grow up stronger with each other, and never let a memory fade.

As we continue to move on throughout life, it is nice to only be a call or text away. I wish the best for all of you, and I cannot wait to have our summer get-togethers all over again this summer. Miss you all and love you all sometimes...

P.S. Yes, we will go on the swings, play flashlight tag, and lose at least one person that first night back!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
