A Letter To Myself In Five Years

A lot of people say college was the best years of their life, but I'd like to think the best years of my life haven't happened yet.

Dear Future Me,

I hope more than anything, you are happier than you ever been. I want you to know that no matter what, I’m so proud of you. You’ve come so far in the past years and I’m so happy you put your dreams and goals first and foremost.

You’re either so in love or single and completely focused on your career. Either way, you are so happy and I’m so happy about that. I hope though that you found the perfect balance between your career and love life. By this I mean if you are single, I hope you aren’t shutting people out just because of your career. You’ve always been the kind of girl to think a guy will hold you back from your dreams and goals, but I hope you find someone that pushes you and motivates you to be your best self. I hope you open up to whoever may be in your life and that they add nothing but happiness in your life. If you find yourself in a relationship where you feel held back or that they are taking happiness away from your life, it is okay to move on.

I hope you love your job so much and are working for a company you absolutely love. You’re not the kind of person to settle, so I’m sure you love your job and wake up excited to go (the majority of the time). Everything you did in college, whether it was all the work, clubs, or connections made, finally paid off. Success really is the best revenge and I hope you are succeeding in whatever you’re doing. You’re probably starting to save money in order to follow your long-term dream of opening your own boutique. It’s never too late to dream another dream. If your dreams have shifted, just know I’m not mad that your long term dream won’t even be achieved, but rather I’m so happy you are working for something else and found your passion in life. If you find yourself unhappy in your career, it’s okay to look for something else.

I have no doubt in my mind that you’re still friends with all your friends from home. You guys have been through everything together and I hope that continues. However, I hope you have also met a core group of friends wherever you may be. I hope you still talk to the few people you were close with in college. I really hope you have finally put yourself first and have learned to cut negative people and toxic friendships out of your life. You deserve friends who care about you constantly, not just when it’s convenient. Your friends need to have the same values, mindset, and goals as you and I hope you have found that no matter where life may have taken you. You learned its okay to outgrow friendships and to move on and I hope you still remember that.

As for your family, I hope you still talk to your parents every day and call them when you get the chance. You are so lucky to have the family you do and I hope you never forget that. They’d do anything and everything for you. I hope in the past five years you were able to develop a better relationship with your sister. No matter how much you might fight, it’s important to establish a relationship. I hope you still appreciate your family just as much as you did five years ago. Don’t forget to thank your family and remind them how you love them.

All in all, I’m so proud of wherever you may be in your life. Continue following you dreams and surrounding yourself with positive people. If love hasn’t found you yet, it will, so be patient. Appreciate your friends and family because they’d do anything for you, but I know you know that.

Love,

You

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
