Dear Future Roomie,
I want to thank you in advance for putting up with my tears, sometimes unclean dishes and my unmade bed every morning. There are some things that I want you to know about me before we embark on the journey of being roomies together.
Nothing is off limits.
We can share anything. What’s mine is yours, and I understand that we may not be the same shoe size, but if you want to wear my cute nude pumps that are two sizes too big, rock them. On a serious note, if you ever need to borrow anything, my closet will be open. This also means that you can tell me anything. If the dress makes me look like a whale, tell me. If I’m acting like an idiot, tell me. No matter how much you think it will hurt my feelings, I would rather hear the harsh truth from you than anyone else.
You will see tears, a lot.
When I am stressed, homesick, tired or just overall sad I will come to you in tears. I may tell you I want to be alone. But trust me right now, I don’t. These are the times that I most desperately need you to give me a hug and tell me that everything will be OK. I will need tissues as well, but bathroom paper towels will do, otherwise we would spend about the same amount on tissues as our college tuition.
You automatically get the aux and the remote.
Unless you want to hear Summer Hits of the 90s and watch the news every single day and night, you can control the music and television. I have never been one to have the best “hits” in my playlist, so that’s all you. Whether we are getting ready for classes or getting ready to go out, I hope to hear the most upbeat, energetic songs. If I hear any Opera music, though, your privileges are revoked.
I like to talk, a lot.
You already know this since you’re one of my best friends already, but I talk a lot. There will be times where we are trying to go to bed and I will just want to spark a deep conversation, and it will be OK that you ignore me. You will hear me rant over classes or people, but just let me know when I am bothering you, and I can zip it. Not only do I like to talk a lot, but I love to sing. Even though I’m convinced that I’m tone-deaf, you will be blessed with my glorious singing, most likely Taylor Swift.
Taking pictures is a must.
I love taking pictures. Keeping pictures is also keeping a clearer idea of the memory. I will have an infinite amount of pictures hanging on my side of the room, and by the end of the school year, the number will most likely double. You obviously have to be featured in most of the pictures, so there will be endless amounts of selfies daily.
So, future roomie, as we enter our journey of living in a small room together, I hope you know that you will become my best friend and my comfort. Our dorm room will become my home for the upcoming months and after a long day, I will want to go to our home away from home and have someone for me if I need support. You will be that person, my best friend, and for that, I can’t thank you enough.
Although I know you will be there for me through all of the nervous breakdowns, late nights spent studying or rough nights out on the town, just know that I will be there for you in return as well. No matter what is bothering you or what obstacle you come across, I hope you understand that there is no time of the day (or night) that I won’t support you through anything. I can’t even express my excitement for the upcoming school year and being able to share it with you will make it even better, so thank you.
Love,
Your soon-to-be roomie
