To my freshman self,
My what an experience you will have. From highs to lows, to everything in between, you are definitely in for a ride. From 8 a.m.'s to pulling all-nighters, you will learn the beauty of naps, caffeine, and a good playlist. More importantly, you will learn what you do and what you don't like. You will also find out what you want, and what you don't want. Overall, you will gain a clearer perspective of yourself as an individual.
During the year, you will most likely not know if you're going or coming. You won't have it all together and that's OK. This is a big transition in your life and you won't know the ins and outs overnight. Also, don't be so hard on yourself. Learn to embrace your imperfections rather than shaming them. Sometimes our weaknesses can become our strengths.
I want to stress to you to not be afraid to try something new. It won't hurt you- I promise. The worst thing that could happen is that you won't like it. At least you can say you tried, even if you continue or move on to another activity. Have less fear and more courage. You will miss so much that college has to offer if you stay stuck in your dorm all the time. Get out, do new things, meet people different from yourself and your culture.
Remember, you don't have to feel obligated to say "yes" to everything. You will never be able to please everyone. Make sure you are not pouring out of an empty cup. There's not much you can give if you have nothing left. Try to give yourself time to recharge and to relax. Your schedule will probably be the busiest it has ever been and for the sake of your sanity, you will need to step away at times just to breathe.
It's OK to go home on the weekends, but don't go home every weekend. It's important for you to transition to college and going home every weekend is not the best balance to do that. However, make sure to call or text your mom every now and then. Yes, you are probably busy, but she worries about you like any other parent and just wants to make sure you are doing well.
When you get stressed, don't be afraid to step back and do something to relieve your anxiety. Realize at the end of the day you are human and you are a work in progress. Also, be proud of your progress no matter how big or small. Every day you are working harder to achieve your dreams and you should be proud of that. Never forget where you came from, but don't let that limit the places you can go. The world is at your fingertips and your journey has just begun. You will be so amazed at what you will accomplish and learn in one year. You will want to do even more once you see how far you can go.
Sincerely,
Your Sophomore Self
