A Letter To My Best Friends As We Head Off To College

Next year, as we go off to different colleges, I will miss seeing all of you every day, but I know our friendships do not end here.

A Letter To My Best Friends As We Head Off To College
Liza Thorell

Dear best friends,

As we get closer to leaving each other for college, I have a lot to thank all of you for and many things I want to tell each of you. First off, I love each one of you so much. There is not a day that goes by that I do not thank God for my best friends. Thank you for always being there for me. Some of you have been around since kindergarten and some just this year, but each of you mean the world to me.

I cannot believe we are old enough to be heading off to college. It seems just like yesterday we were playing with Barbies or going to Jonas Brothers concerts. We have been through it all together, the good times and the bad, and have so many memories from those times. It is all of these memories that make up the beautiful friendships we have. Life would not be the same without you by my side and the funny photos we have to look back on.

Thank you for always supporting me no matter what I do. There has never been a time where I felt like I could not call one of my best friends when I have had a problem. I do not know how you do it, but you always have just the right advice to help me and make me feel a whole lot better. Leaving my best friends next year honestly scares me. These are people I have known my whole life, they know my weird quirks and love me for them. It is hard to find people who genuinely love you for who you are and are always there to support you and cheer you up. We have even rocked one pieces at camp together (best choice ever).

My favorite verse in the bible is Sirach 6:15, "Faithful friends are beyond price; no amount can balance their worth." There is so much truth to this. There is no price tag I could put on my friendships because each friendship is priceless to me.

Thank you for being my study buddies. There are some classes I would not have done nearly as well as I did without you. Even if we did get off topic a lot while studying, it made things a lot easier to have someone to study with.

To say I could not do high school without each of you is a understatement because I could not do life without all of you. Next year as we go off to different colleges, I will miss seeing all of you every day, but I know our friendships do not end here. It will be much more difficult to maintain our friendships since we will not see each other. I can't wait to see how each one of us grows as people and as friends in this next chapter of life. I love you all dearly and will cherish our memories forever. This is not a goodbye, but simply a see you later. I know all of you are just one text, call, or FaceTime away.

P.S. I cried while writing this because I love you all so much and I am always here for each and every one of you.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
