To My Baby Sister,
I know you hate it when I use the term “baby” sister, but to me, that’s what you’ll always be. Even though next month, you’ll be 15 (which, thank God, because I’ve been hearing “I’m almost 15” pretty much since the day after you turned 14), try not to grow up too quickly. I know that when you’re the youngest of four girls, it’s easy to see the fun things and freedom that your older sisters have, but I promise you, you will get there eventually, and when you do, you will long for the days when life was a little easier and bills were not a thing. If I could go back to being 15, there are a few things I would do differently, but instead of dwelling on things I can’t change, I am going to pass my wisdom on to you.
1. Learn When To Bite Your Tongue
You and me have always been a lot alike; a little sassy with a lot of opinions which can sometimes get us into trouble. Take it from someone who was grounded often and missed out on things with friends: learn to bite your tongue. You might not always agree with Mom and Dad, but I promise that they really do have a good reason for everything, and have your best interest and safety at heart. So even though you may not agree when they tell you you can’t go do something, bite you tongue, because it usually only ends up worse if you don’t.
2. Don’t Be Too Boy Crazy
I know it’s your freshman year of high school and there are hormones, school dances, craziness, and boys, but be careful whom you give your heart to. There is plenty of time for boys in the future, so don’t be too quick to stop being a kid. Keep your innocence for as long as you can and don’t feel pressured to have a boyfriend just because all of your friends do.
3. Friends Will Come and Go
While we’re on the subject of friends, it’s important to remember that friends will come and go. Sometimes, for no reason at all, the person you thought was going to be your best friend forever just isn’t anymore. Sometimes, you grow apart because of your lack of classes together, or maybe something more dramatic, like liking the same boy. Whatever it is, know that you’re never alone, because I will always be your friend.
4. Be Yourself
High school is a weird time for everyone. Everyone is just trying to figure out who they are. Be who you are, not who anyone else want you to be. Have strength to stand up for what you believe in. Don’t go along with something you don’t think is right just because you think it will make you more popular.
5. Be Kind
Years down the road, when you are finally out of high school, how are people going to remember you? Think about the kind of person you are becoming and try your best to be someone that people only have good things to say about years later when they are looking back on their high school experience.
6. Never Stop Pursuing Your Dreams
Don’t ever let someone tell you can’t do something. You are smart, talented, and you can do anything you set your mind too. You have big dreams; don’t stop until you achieve them. You may stumble along the way, but there is dignity in getting back up and trying again.
I know that sometimes it can be hard to listen to my advice, because, if you’re anything like me (which I know you are), you’ll want to make your own mistakes. But I promise if you listen to even just one of these pieces of advice, it’ll make high school a little easier. Just know that no matter what, I’ll always be right behind you, cheering you on every step of the way.
Love,
