A Letter To JoJo Fletcher

Everything I've ever shouted at my TV screen...

A Letter To JoJo Fletcher

Dear JoJo,

You and I have had a longer relationship than you have had with any of those delicious men on "The Bachelorette" so I need to start with the beginning…and the beginning is "The Bachelor."

I remember the moment you stepped out of that limo and into the driveway of that chic California mansion. The anticipation was rising with each newcomer. Every time I saw that sleek black door open, I was ready to analyze the expensive evening gowns and the makeup and hair jobs of each girl. I was ready to look at their occupations and scrunch my nose each time it was something boring or reminiscent of “entrepreneur." I was on the edge of that seat when the door opened and out came something unexpected. A girl in a beautiful red evening gown wearing a…unicorn mask. Let’s just say I was the tiniest bit let down.

You walked out stumbling, announced that you couldn’t see where you were going and I was already cringing. Everyone on the show tries to make a memorable first impression but this one and many others were just plain embarrassing (cough cough Saint Nick on the current season of The Bachelorette). Despite the awkward introduction, Ben guided you to him and took the mask off to reveal a gorgeous girl named Joelle, a 24-year-old real estate developer from Dallas, Texas. You said “unicorns do exist and I think I’m yours”. It was catchy and cute and it definitely stuck. That was the beginning of your long journey to find love.

The weeks went by and by and you slowly developed good chemistry with Ben but if I’m being honest, I never saw you making it far. Though on your dates you had good conversation and passionate kisses, you somehow faded into the background. Everyone’s relationships seemed to be progressing well and fast while you seemed more like a prop. But somehow you slipped your way into the final two. I don’t know how you did it but claps for you, girl. From the very first night, I had a good feeling about Lauren and continued to root her on as my number one pick (and I’m not just saying that to sound “cool”). So when it finally got down to you and Lauren, I already knew how it was going to end. I already knew you were out of the picture and I was happy about it. But something changed.

When all the other girls were eliminated, I finally got the chance to know you. The real you. And I knew how hurt you were by your past relationships and how hard it was for you to trust and open up to another guy. So as each day went by, it warmed my heart to see you giving more and more to Ben. He saw it too, but then that tragic moment came. You know the one. When you told Ben you loved him. I knew how much courage that took for you and I was so happy and proud when he reciprocated the feelings. But that’s when I remembered Lauren. That he loved her too and how I was 100 percent sure they were going to end up together. Surprisingly, that hurt me. Here I was cheering Lauren on for weeks but now I felt so sad for you, JoJo. I saw how genuine you were and how much you deserved the love you wanted. When Ben inevitably chose Lauren, I was hurting with you. Seeing you cry made me wish we could go back and do it all over again. Then you got picked as the next bachelorette.

When ABC announced this, I nearly flung out of my seat screaming. Your second chance was finally here and I had never been more excited to watch a new season of a TV show before (that may be false cough cough Pretty Little Liars). I was nearly counting down the days to the premiere. But let’s get to the real point of this article. I have a few critiques and a few thanks to give. I’m going to try to make these chronological and short as can be.

1. Daniel

The first night he got absolutely wasted and jumped into the pool in his underwear and yet he was still in the house for weeks. Maybe I understand forgiving him and starting over (we all do stupid things when we’re drunk) but he was kept around way too long. It was frustrating to see him stay while good guys got sent home. I never saw a bit of his personality and every conversation was about something pointless or stupid.

2. Wells

Wells was probably the smallest, shyest and sweetest guy in the house. He fought through each physical challenge amongst big men with muscles, nearly fainting trying to win for you. He waited to build a strong emotional connection with you which led him to be the last guy to kiss you in the house. You finally took him on his first one-on-one date and gave him his chance to kiss you and it was magical. I was squealing with delight watching it. And then just like that, you sent him home. I guess it took him too long to get there. I think Wells had a lot more potential and shouldn’t have been punished for being a bit old school. If we could go back in time, you should have kept him around.

3. Chad

Okay, let’s address the elephant in the room. Chad. Quite possibly the most annoying, rude, aggressive guy I’ve ever seen on The Bachelorette. He stomped around the mansion harassing all of the guys for calling him out on his crap, while he swept you off your feet in private. Now listen… I get it. You never once saw his violent tendencies. But you got multiple accounts from different men of his behavior and you continued to keep him there because he was “different” with you. C’mon JoJo, you were smarter than that. He even called you naggy in front of other guys. I do commend you, though, for finally sending him home and for doing it with an insult to his character. That had to hurt and I enjoyed every minute of it.

4. Derek

Throughout the show, you built such a strong connection with Derek. In fact, he was your first one-on-one date. But when you brought him and Chase for a two-on-one, you chose Chase. You yourself said that Chase had never really opened up and had an emotional conversation with you, but he chose to finally do it that night. That one conversation did not compare to the multiple you had with Derek. In the end, I think it was the wrong choice and I also want to yell at the producers for making almost a three-minute montage of Derek crying while you and Chase danced to “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina." It was really uncomfortable and cringeworthy.

5. James Taylor

I’m saving my most important complaint for last and that’s James Taylor. From the first night, I’ve been having a love affair with James Taylor. He’s a southern boy who sings, plays guitar, and writes songs. He’s not super buff like the rest of the guys; he’s got a little layer of chub which I LOVE. And he’s got curly hair and a little scruff. Altogether, he’s my dream man and I was so excited that you saw his potential as well. He made it all the way to the final 6 and I was overflowing with happiness. He was so close to making it to hometown week but you sent him home. After he told you how excited he was to introduce you to his family. I actually took a video of myself screaming in pain when you announced the final rose. Though I’m very unhappy you sent him home, it just means more James Taylor for me.

6. Please pick Luke. The end.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
