What’s the difference between a university and a college? What is this major/minor you speak of? What is a FAFSA? Are you feeling lost with having no idea on how to pursue higher education? No worries. Coming from someone who is a first generation college student and has just completed two years of higher education, I got you.
First things first, NEVER be discouraged for being a first generation college student. There is nothing to be ashamed of. As a matter of fact, you should be proud that you are breaking the unfortunate norm that your family has set. You are showing determination, motivation, and bravery; the list goes on and on. So what if all your friends are continuing on a family tradition of attending *insert name of college or university*. How many people can say they are STARTING a tradition of success? Not many and for that, I commend you.
You are probably saying: “I want to get a college degree…. But where in the world do I start?” Great question. The first step is simple – ask. Ask your guidance counselor, ask your favorite teacher, ask anyone with a college degree for information. I did and it changed my life completely. I was referred to a program designated solely for first generation college students – Upward Bound, one of several TRiO Programs. Convenient, right? (There are also tons of programs for first generation college students at universities, Student Support Services, another TRiO Program definitely worth checking out!) Just never be afraid to ask. Once you have asked, the most important thing to do now is to stay motivated. When you have found the appropriate information needed or a program that fits your needs, stick with it. There will be times that you will feel overwhelmed and you begin to doubt your capability to pursue this dream. The moment you have doubt, think about the life you want and the steps you need to take to achieve it. Keep your grades high and your determination higher. I am certain you will get back on track and continue to achieve your aspiration of pursing a higher education.
The last piece of advice I can give to you is to stop worrying. Think about it; someone has to be the first in the family to get a degree. Who better than you? Stop worrying about failing because you have made it this far and nothing can stop you now. Stop worrying about how you are going to pay for a college education because it is an investment absolutely worth taking. Stop worrying about living on your own because your family is always a phone call away, ready to support you whenever needed. I would be lying if I said I didn’t worry when I was going through the same thing. That is why I am telling you not to. It will all work out in your favor, I promise. If you are as determined and motivated as I know you all are, there is nothing to worry about-- other than which school you’ll start your very own tradition at!
If you take anything away from this, I want you to take this – your past does not dictate your future. Nobody can tell you how your future will pan out. Be the person to prove everyone wrong. Be the person to start a tradition. Be the person YOU look back on and say: “I did this, no one else did; and now I can do anything.”
