I see you on campus, in the classroom, in the city, and even at home. After so many sightings, I figured I’d give you some well-wishes as you rushed to wherever it is you needed to go. You had a nice black jacket, pretty gray scarf, and most likely, a smile that’s even more beautiful. Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough time for me to say hello.
That’s alright, though. It’s been getting colder lately, so I’ve been rushing to the warmer, quieter spots myself. It’s nice to relax without the wind whipping your hair into your face, you know? I’m sure you do, since you always have your hair tied back, hood pulled up, and scarf wound tightly around your neck every time I see you. Nothing’s worse than the creeping fingers of winter’s chill.
But that also means that finals are on the horizon—deep breath—as well as the end of the semester and the time to be with the people you haven’t seen or spoken to in a while. That’s exciting! Are you going to be working over the holidays? Maybe read that book you didn’t have time for? If you’re like me, you’ll probably just sleep a lot, and that’s okay too. It’s called a break for a reason.
I haven’t forgotten that Thanksgiving and Christmas are just around the corner, making this the busiest time of the year, and I’m sure you haven’t either. You’re always going stomp stomp stomp on the pavement with your shoes, so there’s no way the rush of the season isn’t filling you with holiday cheer. I can definitely see it on your face. You have snowflakes in your eyes.
It’s also been a few weeks, but have you seen the trees? I love the reds, but the oranges and yellows warm my heart all the same. It’ll be a bit sad when the colors all fly away for good and the branches are left bare, but it’s just a sign that spring is soon to come. The warm breeze of the new year is only a few months away, and you can unwrap your gray scarf and let that hood down again.
I really hope you got the chance to see the trees—I don’t mean a quick glance—because it’s awful to not enjoy the finer things in life when you’re in a rush. Enjoy your coffee, your tea, and your hot chocolate in the mornings and feel the warmth of your sweater, the fire, and the slight ray of the sun in the afternoon. Then, when nighttime falls and you’re under the blankets, let your imaginings run free and think back on your favorite part of the long day.
It’ll be the holidays very soon, and you can leave the rush behind for a while. After New Year’s, I hope I’ll see you again with that beautiful smile wide and shining, so that I can say hello.
It’ll be a pleasure to finally meet you.
