To The Dog I'll Miss More Than My Parents As I Leave For College

I already miss you.

Hey buddy. It's me, your owner. As I'm packing up my things for college, I want to tell you a few things before I leave. It's not you, it's me. No, we are not breaking up like people do in a relationship, but it's not your fault I'm leaving. Please know that I love you and I will be home every once in a while.

Now, this isn't an excuse to go into my room, pee all over my carpet, and stink up the place. Just because I'm gone doesn't mean that you can do whatever you want. Mom and Dad are going to keep a careful eye out for you in the months to come to make sure my room is how I left it.

Don't rip up EVERY toy that Mom and Dad buy you, either. You have a habit of fixating on one toy and tearing it to shreds just a few hours after getting it. We don't like cleaning up cotton from stuffed toys as much as you don't like the vacuum or scary thunderstorms.

When our family sits around the table for dinner, don't beg for food. Don't go chasing rabbits in the backyard. Don't bark at my sister when she swims in the pool. Do get greedy for belly scratches, treats, and new toys though.

But most of all, don't forget about me.

You have become accustomed to seeing us leave. Not leaving as in abandoning you, but for vacation trips, or in this case, me moving back to college. I don't know what goes on in that funny little head of yours, but know that I don't want to leave you. I certainly wish that I could pack you with me and my many boxes and head back to school. I'm sorry that I have to leave, but I'm sorrier that you can't come to classes with me.

Make sure that Mom and Dad give you all the toys and treats that you want. When I FaceTime them, make sure that when I ask for you, make sure to make an appearance on camera. Because you know what? I probably called them to see you (sorry Mom and Dad).

I'm going to miss you a lot. In the short time that is summer, I realized that I don't get to see you as often as I like. Our cuddles on the couch, me throwing the ball around the living room for you, and outdoor adventures around the backyard are quickly coming to an end. Being in college is amazing, but hanging your picture on my wall isn't enough.

So, as I leave again, remember all our fun times and know that you have a special place in my heart.

Miss you already,

Your owner/best friend

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
