To me, high school was the longest thing of my life. I had spent 13 years in the same building with the same people. I spent 13 years with the same teachers and the same janitors (shoutout to my boy Marty). I spent 13 years walking the same halls, at the same football field, living a life I thought would never end. How was there life beyond the friends I had inside the walls of my high school? I am sure a lot of you are thinking the same thing. Well I am here to tell you that there is life out there, and it gets better.
Whether you were the superstar athlete, the band nerd or somewhere in between, you will find your place. That is the great thing about college and the rest of the world. There are all kinds of people with the same interests as you. Go find them! Branch out! You don't need to be confined to a stereotype. Break boundaries, and find where you belong.
College can be scary. Trust me, I asked my mom to take me back before move in. I am glad she didn't. Explore college. Explore the opportunities out there, and learn more about who you are. There is no limit. There is no status quo for you to follow. You can literally be anything. Want to be the next Steve Jobs? You are capable. Want to be the next top designer? PR pro? Wall Street ruler? Baby, the world is yours. Go frickin' take it.
I think too often people are told that their dreams are too unrealistic. Well they aren't. You are literally capable of anything you can set your mind to. You just need to go out there and do it.
The world is a scary place. I'm graduating college in a year! I know! But I promise you that you'll figure it out. I don't care who you are. I don't care about your gender, your ethnicity, your race, your sexuality. None of that matters. At the end of the day, the sky is the limit, and only you can stop yourself.
So, to the high school kids of 2016, actually to everyone: don't worry. Things may seem scary now, but they'll be just fine soon enough.
