A Letter To My High School Best Friend
Sara Clemens

Dear Best Friend,

First of all, cheers to us for still being the best of friends even though we graduated high school over 2 years ago and we don’t go to the same colleges. I’d like to thank you for being one of the few people who means it when they say “I’m only a phone call away.” Whether it’s the middle of the day or it’s 2am, I can text or call you and get a response within a reasonable amount of time. Thanks for always keeping me updated with what’s going on in your life and for checking up on me when we haven’t talked in a few days. I don’t think I’ll ever find a friend like you, one who still tries to maintain a friendship despite the constant distance and busyness we have. I know you’re my ultimate best friend because when we’re reunited whether it’s after a few days or a few months, it’s like nothing has changed and we pick up exactly where we left off. I’m glad you’re the person that I get to reminisce on embarrassing high school stories with because most of the time we were with each other when they happened.

Thanks for being my gym buddy whenever we are reunited and also being the person I can pig out and watch chick flicks with on a Saturday night. Whenever someone asks who my best friend is, I’m more than happy to tell them it’s you because anyone would be lucky to have such an amazing friend like you! There’s no one else that I’m more comfortable around or willing to do crazy shit with. We both know that the only reason we come back to our hometowns during school breaks other than to see family is to see each other because, well, these towns have nothing else really going for them. Thanks for being my adopted 3rd sister and letting me be a part of your family too.

I’m glad I have you to give me a reality check when I need it and for telling me when my outfits a wreck or there’s something in my teeth. Thanks for being my Sunday morning coffee date whenever possible and for somehow ending up being allergic to gluten so that when we go out to eat I’m not the only weird one. You always know how to cheer me up when something’s wrong and that is something I am eternally grateful for! I can’t wait for the day when we both have amazing jobs and we can go out on our yachts and drink wine like we’ve been planning for years. Here’s to you best friend, I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
