A Letter To My Middle School Self

Everything I wish I knew then, but I know now.

A Letter To My Middle School Self

Hey Middle School Me,

You're probably going to roll your eyes at more than half this letter like you just did at something mom just said (spoiler alert: whatever she just told you, she was right about it. It's OK, it took me years to figure that out too. You'll get there). I want you to listen, this stuff is important.

A boy or two will break your heart. I don't mean to be blunt, but I mean to be blunt because it happens. It isn't the end of the world. Get your eye rolls ready, because this one will really floor you. Each one will come and go and eventually be a thing of the past. Don't spend too much time worrying about guys in general. Boys aren't everything. In a few years from now you'll start binge watching Grey's Anatomy and you'll here this quote, "He is not the sun, you are." Remember that one, it's a good reminder when things don't go your way in the relationship department.

Find a person. Someone who is there through the good, the bad, the ugly, and the really ugly. That's the kind of person you keep around. You'll know you found your person when you can argue with them till you're blue in the face, but still be able to laugh with them hours later like nothing ever happened.

Spend your time slowly and wisely for many reasons. Netflix is great, but take some time to make real life memories. In a few years some people won't be around. The idea that "every day could be your last" becomes a little more apparent. Don't miss the little moments that actually end up being the big moments.

You're going to get far too addicted to coffee in college. Honestly, don't change this one. You run on Dunkin.

Selfies become a thing. They start as pictures taken in a mirror with your friends using the digital camera you got for Christmas, and the flash takes up most of the frame. Then they switch to over edited front camera shots from your iPhone. Use both sparingly. Seriously.

I do have to applaud you for never losing sight of a good throwback song. Keep that up.

Appreciate your loud, obnoxious, nosey family. They love you, care about you, and are your biggest supporters. They mean so well.

Don't be sorry for who you are. You're going to find people that love you for you. Every bump in the road is so worth it, because those people are really great.

Did I mention mom is right about everything?! Because she is!

Hang in there kid, I promise life gets a lot less awkward soon enough!

Sincerely,

College Me

P.S. I swear the style trends get much better and one day you'll actually learn how to put on makeup the right way!!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
