To The High School Senior Who Just Accepted to Saginaw Valley State University:

Congrats!

Getting accepted to colleges is always a really exciting experience. It shows that all your hard work has finally paid off. Saginaw Valley State University is an amazing school and by going to SVSU you learn so much and get so many new experiences. SVSU has done a lot for me and it can do a lot for you too.

It has given me the opportunity to meet so many new people. In the three years that I have gone here, I have met a lot of people. I have become friends with people that I never imagined I would be friends with. There are so many different people with all different personalities and you'll definitely find those people that you click with. Some people I have clicked with more than others but that is what college is about.

The classes are more individualized. Most of the classes you would take at SVSU are more one on one. Other than a few big lectures, my classes have been around 20 to 30 students. This gives the opportunity for your professors to actually know your name. Your professors get to know you really well. They know your personality and your learning style a lot better than big classrooms. If you look like you're having a hard time your professors can tell and they genuinely care. They care about your future and not just about what you're learning at the time. The professors at SVSU are some of the best people I've gotten a chance to meet.

When you go around campus you actually see people you know compared to other campuses. I walk through the buildings and see at least one person I know. It might not be someone you are super close with, but at least it is a friendly face and a nice smile. It isn't like other universities where you have someone in a class but you never see them on campus. If you have a class with someone you are a lot more likely to see them on campus.

You don't have to take buses or drive to get around campus. At other universities, it could take 10 minutes with driving just to get to your next class across campus. A great thing about SVSU is that the campus is pretty small. You can get to everything on campus within 5 minutes by walking. The campus is pretty easy to navigate. Most of the buildings are connected, which means you don't have to walk outside. This becomes extremely useful during the winter when you don't want to walk outside.

SVSU becomes your home. It truly becomes your home away from home. SVSU is where you spend the majority of your time so it becomes home. Our campus community is also very close. Everyone on campus supports their fellow students through anything. We all work together to make the university even better than it is.

Congrats again on getting accepted to a great school. SVSU has given me so many great experiences and it could give you some too.

Sincerely,

Your Future Cardinal Peer

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

19 Lessons I'll Never Forget from Growing Up In a Small Town

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
