A Letter To My Future Daughter

To the person who is half of me but my everything.

A Letter To My Future Daughter
A Kup of Katie

There's still some time before we meet, but there's some things I want to tell you.

From the moment you are placed in my arms, I can promise you I’ll do everything I can do make sure happiness is in your life. However, I need to be honest with you, no one is in charge of your happiness but yourself. Not me, your father, your friends, and especially not your future romantic interests (whoever they will be.) It’s all up to you, but know that we are here to help you with that.

I hope you love yourself, and it’s more than just saying that you do. I want you to mean it; I want you to be comfortable with who you are, how you look like, and who you aspire to be. Be honest, kind, but most importantly be yourself.

As harsh as this may sound, you must go through struggle to find strength. Those good days feel great because you know what a bad day looks like. There might be a time where you feel like the world is against you, or a feeling of constant emptiness. Whatever it is, I won't let you go through it alone, I will be there when you need me. If it’s 2AM please do not turn to alcohol, drugs, or pain to yourself as a solution because your demons won’t drown because they can and will swim. Instead, climb into bed and I will reassure you all will be well until you fall asleep. I want to love your 2PM and your 2AM self. Your mental health will always comes before school; your health and happiness matter to me more than the score on the top of your test. Low scores will not make me think little of you or make me love you any less, it just means that we get to spend more time together to find an appropriate solution because school is still important too.

Don’t dumb yourself down for a boy, and don’t be ashamed of loving science. One day, you’ll meet a boy or girl who will like you for you, and all those songs about love will make sense. They’ll see art galleries in you where you only saw empty walls. You’ll feel butterflies and the sound of their name will make your heart flutter, and talking to them makes you feel like it’s the Fourth of July everyday. If in case that feeling ever comes to an end, one of the most important things I will ever teach you is that pain is only temporary. Hurricanes are named after people, and you will find sense in that practice. Like hurricanes they take a great amount of healing and recovering. Take your time.

I will always love you. No matter how many times you toss the word hate or the thousands of door slams we’ll endure. You might get some personality traits from me and your father, but at the end of the day you will become your own person and I can’t wait to watch you grow.

If for some reason you never listen to whatever I say just remember this letter.

I love you,

Mom (the cool parent)

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
