Dear Friends,
Throughout the past few months we've been texting back and forth, and you've displayed all of your worries for the coming years. For those of you who are seniors, you're in the final stretch. For those of you who aren't, it may seem like there's an eternity left. But I promise, if you make the most of it, you'll succeed.
Kids in high school can be tough; it is a period where everyone is growing up and figuring out who they are. Then, when they find an identity that suits them, they stick with certain groups of people. These groups become solidified throughout the years, and members become too afraid to break them. They also become too afraid to lose who they have, so they protect their group from most newcomers, and only stick to those few people they know. Maybe you're the one floating from place to place, and all of the doors are closed. This doesn't matter, and you can't understand now, but you'll understand when you look back.
I was one of the floaters in high school who only found my place among the clubs that I loved so dearly. Some of the best people I met were in grade levels below me that I never would have known existed otherwise. It is the bonds that I made with these people that have stayed with me for the long run. I met many of you in this way, and the friendship we have is very dear to me.
So, my challenge for you is to talk to someone new. Is there a quiet kid who’s new to the school that doesn’t seem like they have anyone? Is there someone that is friendly in one of your clubs that you’ve always been afraid to talk to? These are the kids you need to reach out to; I promise, you won’t regret it.
And hey, college is just around the corner. Though it can be a lot of work sometimes, it is amazing, and something that you should look forward to. You’ll meet people who are weird like you that you get to hang out with every day. It’s a pretty sweet deal.
Until then, I know that you can make it through, and I'll always be a phone call away. I have faith in you, and remember, I’ll be there to watch you walk across the stage for your diploma.
- Your friend who "left you" for college
