Dear Summer,
As you are coming to a close yet again, I am thankful for the time you have given me, but am dreading your impending departure. It felt like you would never come last winter, and now you’re leaving much too soon. I will miss your warm sunshine, carefree nights, and car windows down kinda days. For three short months you have provided me with lots of laughs, plenty of work, and quality family time. So here are a few notes of thanks, as I will soon be bidding you adieu.
Thank you for giving me weekends spent in nature. From camping with my aunt and sister, to exploring new places with my friends, you have provided me with countless opportunities to enjoy all that Mother Nature has to offer. The luscious green grass, the smell of rain after a rainstorm, and the beauty of it all coming together while hiking in a forest makes me wish winters in Wisconsin were not so harsh.
Thank you for giving me nights filled with music. From Summerfest concerts, to concerts in the local park, and even the car windows-rolled-down-jam sessions, you have filled my soul with harmonies and lyrics. Although music will not vacate my life during the school year, the opportunities to enjoy it come less often. Spending a night with thousands of other people who love the same band I do, singing their songs at the top of our lungs, and being awestruck by the pure talent of the artists is a feeling that only a live summer concert can give, and for that, I thank you.
Thank you for giving me days filled with work. Although this may be the least enjoyable part of your time here, I appreciate the opportunity to build up my savings and feel like I am actually doing something with my life. It might not have always been easy, but I knew that if I wanted to participate in extravagant summer plans with my rich friends or even be able to financially survive this school year, work was essential. Thank you for giving me the time to become more financially responsible, and the ability to buy concert tickets.
Thank you for giving me hours of relaxation. It is so great that I have no school work to worry about while you’re in town. Knowing that there are no pressing matters, and that I can just use my free time to do nothing is so liberating. Thank you for making my responsibilities few and my napping time abundant.
Thank you for giving me time away from my college BFFs so that I realized how much I love them, and can’t wait to see them again soon! Absence really does make the heart grow fonder, and after spending a few days with my college pals during your stay, I can officially say that I am SO excited to begin school again. Not for my classes, or for walks up the hill, but for the amazing times that I know I will have with my roommates and group of friends this coming year. So thank you for helping me realize that although summer was a much needed mental break from my studies, it also made me really miss my friends.
Summer, you may come and go without much warning, but I have realized you serve us in more way than we give you credit for. So, instead of being mad at you, I’d like to take this opportunity to say a proper thanks, and farewell. I’ll be waiting for you to bring the heat.
Sincerely,
Me
