Dear First Day of School,
So we meet again. It’s been a year since we’ve seen each other and we have a lot to discuss for the fast approaching big day. Achieving the perfect First Day takes planning, organization, and cooperation and I am confident that if we work together we can make this year the best one yet.
First let me stress an important request- please keep your composure. I know you tend to get emotional around this time of year, but my carefully selected back-to-school outfit doesn’t need an umbrella for an accessory. Also, if it isn’t too much to ask, please have mercy on my hair and grant me a good hair day just this once.
I don’t know if you’ve read my schedule but unfortunately I have a few of those pesky eight A.M classes this semester. I would appreciate you granting me with teachers who understand the struggle of making the transition from summertime and accept the fact that I will most likely get lost. While we’re on the topic of schedules and getting lost, could you do me a solid and try to make my classes easy to find so I don’t feel like I’m on some treasure hunt with my “freshman alert” campus map? That would be great.
Also what First Day wouldn’t be complete without the absence of homework? We seem to have had some miscommunication about this last year, but I want to be sure we’re on the same page this time around. NO homework please! We’re on the same team here. I don’t want to be boggled down with First Day assignments and you don’t want to deal with a grump. See? Same team.
I know since you’re used to being both the most anticipated and dreaded day of the school year, you can relate with having anxiety and being nervous about what the day will bring. How about we strike a deal? I will ease your nerves by letting you now that I don’t hate you. (In fact I look forward to you each year.) And now that you’re mind has been eased, can you help me out by calming my nerves and reassuring me that there is nothing to be worried about on my big academic debut?
Everyone says to make new friends but as the saying goes you must also not forget to keep the old. I would really appreciate you finding a way to put some of my friends in my classes but I also wouldn’t be opposed to you mixing a few new (but cool) people in too. Lastly, I know you can’t do much about my tendencies to embarrass myself but could you try your best to help me refrain from falling on my face, wearing my clothes inside out, or getting called on when I was day dreaming about who Rory’s boyfriend will be in the new episodes of Gilmore Girls?
Just to recap- not because I think you’ll forget anything of course- no umbrellas, good hair day, empathetic teachers, no getting lost allowed, no homework, nerves not welcome, friends old and new, leave the embarrassment at home, and oh did I mention no homework?
That should do it.
Thank you and until next year-
Yours truly,
A worried about their first day- likes to plan ahead- college student.
