A Letter Back To My Seventh Grade Self

I can't believe we're graduating, either.

A Letter Back To My Seventh Grade Self
Madison Beatty

My seventh grade reading teacher does this project where we write letters to our graduating self. I thought I’d take this opportunity to share, and write back.

Dear Twelfth Grade Maddie,

“Congradulations! I wonder what’s going on now! It’s June 5th, 2012. I can’t believe I’m 5 years older. I’m in Miss G’s class, watching the Thief Lord. I <3 7th Grade. My birthday is in 22 days! K and me might have a sleepover. She’s in Disney. T, M, and N are coming over on the 11th. I can’t believe I’m graduating! Am I going to Julliard? I hope so. My social studies final = 88%! Battle of the Books is tomorrow. Come visit Miss G! It’s been an amazing year. I want to write more, but what? I’m really going to miss my section, but what can you do? Never forget Fantasy Mysteries! Oh, one last thing! Don’t ever- EVER- forget PDL! <3, Maddie”

Dear Seventh Grade Maddie,

I got your letter! Today is May 27th, 2017. Graduating is really exciting, and kind of scary, too- only 10 days to go! Our birthday’s in a month from today. We aren’t going to Julliard, but we are going to a really awesome school near home. After moving here, I decided to stay in one place for a little while longer. Take the opportunities in front of you, do as much as you can, and keep your creativity alive. There are many wonderful friends and memories in your future. You will really grow, learn, and change- but don’t be afraid! Change is good. I’m so excited for you; enjoy the years to come. They are unlike any other. <3, Maddie.

P.S. I’m so sorry, but I can’t remember what PDL is. I’ll remember eventually.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
