A Letter To America

United we stand and divided we fall.

Dear America,

I was born and raised in the USA and I'd like to classify myself as a proud American. I'd like to say your history is quite unique and reek of independence. Whether if it was the 13 colonies who demanded independence in 1776 or the slaves fighting for freedom in 1865 —

you were was always eager for some sort of liberation. However, it is safe to say that independence often came at a price and change wasn't always welcomed.

You're still fighting that good fight, scratch that....that good fight isn't good, because you're fighting with one of the worst enemies in the world that that had the power to destroy empires, colonies, nations, monarchies, and everything in between. That enemy's name was hate. You either fought against it or fought alongside with it.

Like I said before, I am a proud American. I'll rep your red, white, and blue all day and everyday, but as a proud American I'll also admit I'm not so proud with you today. There's a divide in our nation and hate etched upon people's faces. In the past decade shootings, massacres, racism, wars, and hate crimes have replaced the foundation of what you are all about.

Many would argue that those components have always been intertwined with your reputation and most possibly would be your legacy, and as a black female I should identify myself among the hatred.

But, I don't.

As an African-American female I acknowledge the pain of those who lost their lives, reputation, self-pride, and their respect due to the color of their skin. I have experienced racism, but I refuse that from hindering my belief in you and love for you.

I still stand with you and I still have faith in you.

You are still a powerful nation, but the division between us will have you crumbling. We have made many detrimental mistakes, but if you look on the bright side you were actually found by mistake. Whether you believe the Viking Lief Ericsson discovered the you in 1,000 AD or Christopher Columbus who sailed the ocean blue in 1492, both of these men found our home in you on accident.

And yet we prospered into one of the most developed nation. A nation where we demanded respect. A nation that aided those who couldn't help themselves.

It's time for us to unite. It's time for you to be the symbol of freedom, change, and love.

You have made mistakes, but in due to time you will learn and you shall prosper again.

Sincerely,

A proud American who believes in the red, white, and blue.

P.S

I hope one of these mistakes don't happen with the new presidency.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
