Disclamer about the letter: I wrote this Sophmore year of high school in heath class. This never happened. DO NOT drink and drive and DO NOT get in the car with anyone under the influence!
Dear Gram,
Please don’t be mad at me. I made a bad mistake, and things turned out even worse. I’m sorry. I remember you telling me that if I ever get drunk at a party or anywhere that I should call for a ride home. You told me not to make stupid decisions and I simply nodded it off, hearing it for the thousandth time, that is was just words and didn't really mean anything. I was in a car accident.
Do you remember when we used to have Thanksgiving dinner with the whole family, and not just my aunts and the cousins? We used to make a big deal out of it and actually have a great time. Do you remember when we used to have Friday family night dinners? But as time went on the amount of people decreased? Even though eventually it just ended up me and you, these are one of the best memories that we have together. Just because I had someone in my family that I could talk to. Do you remember when we took a road trip to Maine and we stayed in the cabin in the middle of nowhere? I remember that we watched Charlie’s Angels there every night or played a board game, because there was nothing else to do. That was a great time. But the funniest part was when a bug flew up Mom’s nose and she left early, then Jess and I had to squeeze in the back of the car, and we hated each other, times like now we love each other more than ever.
The night of the crash is a blur, because I had hit my head off the dashboard. I don’t really recall what happened much because I kept blacking out. I went to a party and I had one drink. The guy that I went to the party with Chris, drank a couple beers, and somehow I knew it would be stupid to get in the car with him, but I did it anyway. I remember him driving down the road, and I remember going through a red light, and I yelled at him for it. How could he not pay attention to the road? He was drunk. I asked him to pull over and Chris turned the car way too fast and hit the guardrail. Thats when I hit my head. Another car must have not seen us because they crashed right into us and we ended up smashing into the guardrail. Then I blacked out.
Before the crash we were having fun, we were out partying. Having the time of our lives we thought. About 24 hours later now, my view has now changed about what ‘the time of our lives’ are supposed to be. Everyday is mystery. There isn’t really anything to remember about what happened before the crash but the party, loud music , and sweaty drunk/high people being buffoons.
After the crash I would wake up for about 5 minutes and then blackout again. The first time it happened I had a banging headache, and the sirens weren’t helping, it felt like my head was vibrating, and I was completely confused. I couldn’t quite put it all together in my mind. After that it went black for a minute, and when I did come back, I tried to look over to my left and see if Chris was okay. I couldn’t quite move all the way to see, because of the extent of the pain I was feeling, but from what I saw, Chris was not okay.
Its hard to describe what I had heard and what I saw, because of the amount of thoughts that ran through my mind. Where is Chris? What happened? Why do I hurt so much? Am I dead? Is Chris dead? Where am I? I can say that I saw the red and blue lights flashing, and the smoke of the car. I don’t know what happened after that, I woke up in the hospital room. Chris died, there is another person from my life gone.
Life, for me. ha. What life am I going to have? Im obviously going to be house bound for a while, honestly I am not saying that that is anything bad, it might actually help me more then you may think. My life will change. My friday nights I wont be partying every week. I won’t be able to travel the world with my best friend. From the medical bills I have to pay that will put a pause in trying to go to college.
If I could change one thing about the night of the crash, I would. I’d give anything to have my best friend back, but sadly I know that is not how life works. That night I wouldn’t have let Chris drive home. I should have taken his keys from him. Although I didn’t get that hurt in the crash, a few broken ribs and some stitches. I think I was more affected by the aftermath then the actual event.

Again, this is not something that happened to me, the Maine part and the Thanksgiving parts are real, other then that it is not! DO NOT drink and drive and DO NOT get in the car with someone under the influence!
