Let's Talk About Abortion

Let’s talk about abortions. Because I feel like some Christians really need to.

Every time there’s a big election year, there are few serious issues that always tend to come up. Abortion, without fail, is always one of them.

I feel like a lot of people in America blindly support abortion because it’s the cool thing to do, and by doing so, you’re supporting women’s rights.

The sad thing is, I really don’t think that they realize how genuinely wrong they are.

So, here are some things to know about abortions.

According to Dr. Anthony Levatino, who is a practicing Obstetrician-Gynecologist (who has also performed over 1200 abortions himself), there are many different types of abortions.

One type of first trimester abortion, known as medical abortion, occurs in 10 weeks or less of pregnancy, and involves two steps. The first step involves taking a pill that will cut off nutrients to the fetus and kill it, and the second is taking a different pill that will induce heavy bleeding in the woman’s uterus, forcing the dead baby out.

The woman often sits on a toilet in order to get rid of the child, which she will then flush.

As far as safety for the mother, risks of medical abortions include: pain, vomiting, diarrhea, heavy bleeding, nausea, and even maternal death, though the risk is low.

Another type of first trimester abortion, which occurs between 5-13 weeks of pregnancy, is surgical, where an OBGYN will use a powerful suction tool and suck the child into a tube, and out of the mother.

A high risk here is accidentally leaving parts of the baby behind in the mother, causing an incomplete abortion.

Risks for the mother include: injury to uterus or cervix, hemorrhage, infection, maternal death, and complications with future pregnancy.

A second trimester abortion, which occurs between 13-24 weeks of pregnancy, is also surgical.

During this type of abortion, the abortionist will suck out the embryonic fluid, and then proceed to tear the child’s limbs apart and pull them out of the mother. They will then crush the head of the child and pull out its skull fragments. They will also proceed to assemble the unborn child’s body parts outside of the womb to ensure they’ve gotten all of it out.

There are many risks for the mother here as well, including uterine and cervical damage, infections and hemorrhaging, which can lead to death and complications with future pregnancies.

And finally, there is a third trimester abortion. This occurs from 25 weeks – term. At this point in the pregnancy, the baby is almost completely viable and could potentially survive outside of the womb.

On day 1 of the abortion, the abortionist will inject a lethal dose of medicine that is used to treat heart problems into the unborn baby’s head. The baby will feel the needle, because babies can feel pain at this point. The mother will then have to carry her dead child inside of her for a few days while she waits for dilation.

When it’s time for delivery, if she cannot make it to the office, they might advise her to deliver her baby into a toilet or a tub, and the abortionist will come and clean up. If she can make it to the clinic, they will deliver her still-born child.

This procedure is often high risk and has risks of hemorrhage, lacerations, uterine perforations, death of the mother and complications with later pregnancies.

I know what a lot of people will say. Something along the lines of “Are you saying that if a woman is raped, you think she should be forced to have that baby?” Or “What if it’s a medical emergency and she needs to have an abortion?”

Let me give you a hard truth that a lot of people in today’s society don’t want to hear:

About 0.3% of abortions that take place yearly in the US happen due to rape.

About 0.03% of abortions that take place yearly in the US happen due to incest.

About 0.1% of abortions that take place yearly in the US happen due to risk to maternal life.

About 0.8% of abortions that take place yearly in the US happen due to maternal health issues.

About 0.5% of abortions that occur in the US are due to fetal health issues.

That leaves about 98% of the 699,202 abortions that were reported to the CDC in 2012.

To be clear, that’s 685,217.96 abortions that were performed 'just because'.

Just because the mother wasn’t ready, or the family didn’t want her to. Just because she didn’t want another baby. Just because.

Did you know that the wait list to adopt a child is often years long?

Did you know that many couples in this United States cannot have children, for a multitude of reasons, but desperately want to?

Did you know that women who have abortions are at a high risk of suffering from severe depression?

Did you know that big companies like Planned Parenthood don’t actually care about the mother or the child? They see them as money that can be made.

Did you know that there are hundreds of pro-life clinics and organizations out there to help young mothers or mothers who are not financially stable enough for a child through her pregnancy?

Did you know that Jesus knew us when we were in the womb?

“For You created my inmost being, you knit me together in my mother’s womb.”
-Psalm 139:13

It’s not “anti-women” to be pro-life. If anything, it’s “pro-women” to care about their health, both physically and mentally.

So, before you go jumping on the “pro-choice” bandwagon because it’s cool… take a second and think about what you’re truly supporting.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
