Let's Kill Cynicism

It's really got to go

You don't have to look far in today's world to find a heavy dose of rhetoric about what's wrong with modern culture. Whether it's on a car ride with your parents, at a family reunion or at school, everyone has plenty to say about the political and cultural climate, and very little of it is especially optimistic.

Some blame Trump, others Obama, but everyone's got someone, a group of people, a minority, that is surely to blame. Every assumption becomes negative, every move suddenly seems malicious, until finally we've painted each other as Disney villains, devoid of reason and morality (do the terms "rabid liberalism," and "fascist conservatism" ring a bell?).

In truth, I seriously doubt that either the left or the right is out to destroy the United States, that immigrants are all here just to sell drugs and steal jobs, or that the LGBT community is out to silence religion. Rather, I'd like to suggest that the issue in modern society is an unhealthy amount of cynicism.

I'm not without blame here. I can't say I don't roll my eyes and clench my fists when I hear about the current administration's movements and decisions. It's hard not to assume the worst in people when we have access to the news, TV shows that depicts lies and betrayal, books and even classes that flesh out the very worst in human nature. It's difficult not seek out conspiracies or faults in those higher up, often out of nothing but boredom.

It isn't just an issue in regards to our government either, but even in the way we see each other day to day. I can't think of the last time I've seen someone begging for money actually get anything but cruel and pessimistic assumptions about what they'll use it for. Because that's what we've been taught. Don't give money to stranger's, they're drug addicts. Don't give to charities, it all goes to corporations. Don't go to someone crying for help, you might get mugged. It's more than cynical, it's selfish.

So let's stop. Really, actually just stop assuming the worst. When you see someone this week consider them the very best that they could be, at least until they prove themselves otherwise. I promise you, it's a better way to live life. Force yourself, just once or twice, to really reevaluate human nature. You might just get hooked.

Thanks so much the read!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
