Why Can't We Be Friends?
Post Grad Problems

Since the dawn of humanity, we have, as a species, lived in communities. First we lived in small groups of about 40. Later, when we began farming, the groups grew. They grew from small tribes to towns, to cities, to states, to nations. And now, thousands of years later, we have gone from being small groups of 40. We have become one large group of billions of people. All connected by the internet.

Our groups and their size were as much of a determining factor of what we did that the power of a civilization would often be measured by numbers. And as numbers grew, so did we, and we started doing new things. No longer did everyone have to hunt. We could have architects, painters, musicians and every kind of profession that we see today.

Let's jump to our current time and civilization and we see something painful. In these great groups of millions, we still find ways to separate ourselves. We are great civilizations with the need to have smaller communities, and it's all well and good to be those little groups, but we attack each other because of it. We have separated ourselves by really trivial things like: you're black, I'm white, he's Asian, she's Hispanic. We attack each other because of our religions, the very thing that has been there to make us all better people, to make us happier. The very things that tell us to love one another, we use to attack everyone who is different. Why?

I feel like a very good example of this attacks by something that should bring us together is the recently released Pokemon Go. The game has been something great to experience: it has a great community of people. Not only does it have a lot of people playing, but for the first time in video games, you can see everyone else that plays it, you can see them outside, you can walk up and talk to them. And yet, something that has such great community and that has brought so many people together has the same issue. The game lets you pick three teams, for the sake of simplicity they are the red team, the yellow team, and the blue team. And these teams have absolutely no importance to the game play, they are only there so there can be multiple teams to unite so that there's some friendly competition. But sadly in the very short time the game has been out on the Internet people are already attacking other teams. It's nothing big or violent but it is saying things like "the blue team is for losers", or "the red team is too aggressive". And there's no point to tear apart communities is there? Can we get along? Can a white man on the red team get along with a black woman on the blue team? I hope so.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
