Alas, 2015 is almost over. And with that we all start thinking about our 2016 resolutions. But before you do, there's a couple things you might want to focus on before you leap into the new year. Whether the year brought you happiness, is ending badly, or somewhere in between, there are still things to accomplish before bringing in the New Year. That way, when 2016 comes around, you'll be starting fresh, at ease, and ready for the year ahead instead of jumping the gun and preparing for the future when there's still time in the present.
Take some time for yourself. Go shopping, go see a movie, take a long bath with all the luxuries. Whatever it is, take some time for something that makes you feel whole. So often, we get caught up in school, in friendships, and in our love lives that we forget to just be with ourselves and our thoughts. But what better time than holiday break to take a day to do all the things that you love to do? Put your phone down, relax, and focus on yourself for at least part of the day.
Say "I'm sorry." We all have those things we've said or done that we wish we could take back. Whether it was something as little as a bad attitude with a friend or a bigger, more complicated issue, if something is bothering you, clear the air. Nothing will feel better than knowing that you did your part in mending something that was once broken.
Begin a new (good) habit. It takes 21 days to create a new habit. If you start now, you won't have to worry about stressing over a resolution once the New Year begins. Sure, it might seem like cheating. But I like to think of it as a head start to a better you. As for some ideas, here's a place to start: go to the gym 3 times a week. Start a journal that you write in at the end of the day. Actively resist thinking judgmental thoughts. Make someone smile everyday.
Learn something new. It doesn't have to be big, but learning something new is inspiring. And at the very least, it'll be one more thing you can add to your personal resume. If you're interested in technology, try learning your way around Photo Shop. More of a creative mind? Pick up knitting, scrap booking, or sewing. Musically inclined? Learn a new instrument or experiment with music production. The year is so packed with course work that we don't have time to dedicate to new hobbies. Now's a great time to find a new side-passion.
Who says the we have to wait for the New Year to make changes? There's no time like the present to make steps towards a better "you." Be proactive this year and use the time that we get over break to create a great ending to 2015, and an even better beginning to 2016. You deserve it!
