No matter what your major is or how hard your new classes are rumored to be, going into a new semester of college is very stressful. It's easy to get lost in the difficulty of a class or task, making it even easier to lose the motivation to give it your all. Here are some things to do that will help you get motivated.
Why is it Important?
You need to think about why you chose to take the classes you are taking. Is it for your major? Is it something you took because it sounded interesting?
Some classes we have to take for our majors are boring, annoying, extremely hard, or all of the above. The best way to get through these classes is to keep in mind that once you get through this class, you will be one step closer to completing all the requirements for your major! You need to stay positive as you take classes like these because if you don't, you will lack the motivation you need to study and pass this class.
If the class is of your interest, then that's great! You should focus during lectures and take textbook notes carefully so that you can succeed in a class that you like. You need to use the love of the class topic to keep you motivated to work during those lengthy homework assignments or projects.
Go shopping!
Buy new stationery to help make studying and note-taking exciting. Make your notes more organized with these tools.
Using colorful highlighters and sticky notes to emphasize important words and facts will not only make studying more enjoyable but also help you remember the information better. Having to switch your regular black pen for a bright pink one to write one word will help you remember that word better.
You can organize your notes to be easier to use for studying purposes by boxing in important facts or equations with colorful highlighters or pens. Having your notes be neat and organized will make you more likely to want to study them later because they will make more sense to you. The different colors actually work to trigger your memory to remember the information as you study and during the test. When I was studying my notes for Chemistry last semester, I had highlighted a word in pink and during the test I could see the word in pink in my head.
Teamwork makes the dream work!
Study with friends.
Knowing that you and your friends are going to be going through the same thing together will motivate you to get up and study or go to class. It will be a group effort, you have to work so that you don't let your friends down.
Group study also helps you have more knowledge about the topic you are studying because everyone will have to understand at least one thing that the others haven't and you all can work together and share information to understand the topic better.
Don't let your efforts go to waste!
And lastly, as scary as it may sound: fear the consequences!
You worked all throughout high school to get where you are now and if you don't continue to work hard, then you will hinder yourself from succeeding. No matter what you're studying, you need to consistently work towards your goal. Let the fear of not reaching your goals motivate you to keep grinding!
