My Lessons From The Road

“Nothing behind me, everything ahead of me, as is ever so on the road.”― Jack Kerouac, On the Road

My Lessons From The Road

I am pretty sure most of you reading this probably lead very mundane, day to day lives and taking a vacation while going to school is the last thing on your mind. But, have you ever considered taking a road trip instead of some overly extravagant vacation that needs way too much planning and execution? If you haven't already, you should. Roadtrips are the most cathartic experiences I have ever had. The feeling of being in a moving vehicle is surreal because you get to leave behind everything and everyone and 'run away'. You get to discover yourself in a way that cannot be done on an airplane or a train because you do not get to choose which exit you get off. You cannot predict the kinds of unexpected adventures you might have along the way, and for that it's a chance worth taking. Being on the road always reminds me of the fear of the unknown, but at the end of that highway, there is not a time I have regretted any of the decisions I have taken.

I have learnt many lessons while being on the road, but here are a few of the most important ones:

1. Spontaneity is your best friend

Roadtrips are never meant to be executed in a planned and organized fashion. It is always about what you are in the mood for. The whole point about being on the road is that your final destination is only a proposed one... you never know where the journey is going to lead you, and that is exactly you should strive for. You pick a highway and you just keep going.

2. Get your jam on!

There is no better time than being stuck on an endless journey with your friends to listen to the cheesiest throwback songs to sing (scream) your little heart out, judgements aside.

3. Sightseeing

Being in a car, you get the front row experience to the best of what the road has to offer to you while moving. It moves you with all kinds of visual feels and the best part? You can randomly stop the car, get out and physically feel it for yourself. You can put down the windows, feel that cool mountain breeze wash over with your hands hung outside dreamily.

4. Your moment of self-realization

Cue existential crises! Anytime I have been washed over with self-doubt, I would immediately run out the door and get on the road. Our issues are only materialized in our head, by getting out there, you learn more about yourself and whatever your problems are, they will disappear. Seeing places helped me realize who I am as an individual and what I am worth to myself. I understood that this is my journey, wherever I choose to go.

5. Experiences cannot be bought

If you are one of those people who sit on your couch, flicking through TV channels (although I am guilty of this too), dreaming about a day where you get to see the world- there is no better day than today and there is no better way than on the road. Your adventures will surpass your expectations because no two trips end up being the same. The people you see, the food you eat, the natural wonders you visit, will always be a different experience every time you do it. At the end of the rainbow, no matter how hard your trip was, you come out a stronger, better person.

Now, grab your keys and head out that door!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
