I hadn’t seen many advertisements for 'The Intern' prior to being pulled into the theatre by my best friend. All I knew was that Anne Hathaway was cast as the lead role, which was all of the convincing that I needed. However, just a few minutes into the movie, my heart was ready to burst due to the overwhelming sweetness of Robert DeNiro’s character, Ben.
A widowed man, unsatisfied with retirement follows up with a flyer looking for senior interns. I’m not talking about high school or college seniors, but rather senior citizen interns. Being the charming person that he is, Ben gets hired on with this rapidly growing business lead by Anne Hathaway.
There is much to be said about both of these characters, but what is most important are the lessons they leave with us.
Humility
Jules Ostin (Hathaway) birthed a company that is flourishing in only nine months. Though many seem to be intimidated by Jules, it is important to note that even as the head honcho, Jules is an awesome boss who loves to serve her employees. She facilitates communication with all departments by making them all accessible on the same floor, drives to the warehouse to teach them to fold tissue paper in packaging, and is constantly celebrating her employees.
Ben Whitaker has spent years in business, but is willing to work as an intern for a company no matter what task he is given. He drives the boss around, grabs coffee, and cleans up others messes all while never seeking praise, simply wanting to learn.
As someone who is just starting out in the career world, I hold the value of learning on the job in the highest regard. It’s crucial that we remember that wherever we are at in our career, we must never stop learning. Also, we must remember that you never know what people or experiences will cause you to learn and grow. Let’s stop looking at work as a chore. Let’s stop looking at our jobs as something we’re entitled to rather than something we are blessed to have -a place to learn and prosper.
Feminism
"It's 2015, are we really still critical of working moms?" - Jules Ostin
Jules is killin’ it. She is a woman who works hard and takes whatever steps necessary to bring her dreams to life.
Sadly, she also encounters a lot of backlash for that. She is viewed as intimidating and absent from her personal life. When in reality, she is very sweet and fighting for all of the aspects of her life to be in harmony. There is something to be celebrated about people like Jules.
She may not be able to take her daughter to every single birthday party, but she always makes time for her daughter and husband while also creating and maintaining a largely growing business.
Forgiveness
Some world shaking things occur to the characters, and there is a lot to be considered and thought through. I think the sweetest victory is to look past what may have hurt us and start over again.
Support
Ben constantly amazed me with his ability to never intrude, but always lend a helping hand. One of the greatest rewards we can get is to set aside our own needs and help others in their time of desperate needs. Whether it be letting someone crash at your place, teaching someone to use the internet, or being a shoulder to cry on, sometimes we’re needed just to be supportive.
In a world full of selfishness, this movie was a breath of fresh air. So, what are you waiting for? Catch it while it’s still in theaters!
