Lessons Learned From My Little Sister

She might be the younger one, but it doesn't seem like it most days.

Lessons Learned From My Little Sister

If you know me or my sister, you would know we are more alike than we would like to admit. We are both very stubborn causing us to fight like... well like sisters. We are only two years apart, but sometimes I feel like she teaches me more than I've ever taught her.

One thing she's taught me is to never be afraid to be different. My sister is 16 and when I was that age all I cared about was my plans on Friday night and what I was going to wear and what people would think of me.

Even now, I care so much more than I should of what people think of me, but she doesn't. She wears whatever she wants because she likes it, not because everyone else is wearing it. She is not a blind follower to the norms of high school. She for sure doesn't do anything she doesn't want to, which sometimes drives me crazy, but then I realize how outstanding that is.

She is so compassionate when it comes to animals and the earth. Some may even say she's a "hippie." She has been vegetarian for a little over a year now and is constantly making me try her interesting foods.

She also sometimes makes me feel guilty for eating meat, but I can't help it I love Chick-fil-A too much to ever give it up. She also is always using different organic or all-natural beauty products which I give her a hard time about normally.

Honestly, I applaud her for being so dedicated to her lifestyle. She doesn't know this but I did try being vegetarian once after she had explained to me why she is a vegetarian.

She's a vegetarian because she believes it is cruel the way animals are treated in the food industry. I only lasted two days before I was craving a Cook-Out burger at 1 am and couldn't say no.

My sister is what you call an old soul. She loves her record player she got for her birthday two years ago and the vinyl’s she took from our grandma's house. For movie nights, she always picks some 80's movie like Pretty in Pink or her favorite Can't Buy Me Love, which I honestly don't ever object to.

My sister is so open and accepting and never fails to handle situations 100% better than I would. She surprises me so much sometimes I think she's the oldest. It also doesn't hurt that she is like five inches taller than me.

She has taught me to be open, to be accepting, and to never be afraid to be myself.

She is my best friend and I can't wait to see how her beautiful heart changes this world because she has changed mine so much in her 16 years already.

I love you, Jordyn!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
