So as my career as a college student comes closer and closer to an end, I have learned a few things that I never thought about before. Sometimes reflection is great for the mind, and can come to some decent life morals.
1. It is OK to be hurt and to give up!
Sometimes in life, we get knocked down and we get tossed around. People need to realize that sometimes you have to give up and say enough is enough. This of course is not about certain things, but for the menial things. Prime example, loving someone who is emotionally draining. There comes a certain point in life when sometimes loving someone can be emotionally, physically, and spiritually draining. That is when it is okay to give up and be hurt.
2. Never Let go of those you met in college!
This one can go with a story. I met my friend Imani when I was a freshman in college during band camp. I have seen her grow and become someone truly amazing. She has been in my life these last four years, and I would never let her go. Even if I move far away, or if she moves far away, she is one of those people I'll always have in my life from now on.
3. Sometimes Vices are more about sanity.
It is okay to have a bad habit or to do something that other people do not approve of. We all have a story and we all have reasoning, so go and take that drink, smoke that cigarette, or chew a lot of gum. It is nobodies business but your own.
4. You don't always have to be nice.
Sometimes it is okay to be mean to someone, as long as it is warranted. Being nice and fake all the time gets tiring and kills your patience. Go ahead and tell of the creepy guy at the bar who will not take a hint, go ahead and tell that group member that he hasn't been helping and he needs to leave, and go ahead and stand up for your beliefs.
5. Lastly, NEVER compromise yourself.
I have changed my major, my wardrobe, my friend circles, my apartments, and my mind so many times in college, however I always stayed true to being Austin. Even when other people wanted me to be something else, I had to learn that I am not them, instead I am me. Not everyone knows this definitely, but this is a lesson most people should know in life.
