Lessons I Learned From My Big

This is one of the most exciting times of the year for sorority families. Everyone is getting new family members and expanding their family traditions. I still can’t believe that I joined Alpha Omicron Pi over a year ago and that I am now a big. Over the past year I have learned so much from my big, and I only hope I can be half as good of a big to my little as she has been to me. Here are just a few of the things she has taught me that I will never forget.

4. She is your go to person.
My big has always been there for me no matter what. Part of being a big is being available to your little whenever she needs you, no matter the time of day or what you are doing. My big has done this flawlessly. I know she will come to my side in a split second if I ever need her.

3. She knows how to have fun.
Ever in need of a good laugh? Your big has you covered. She knows how to have a good time, and she makes sure you do too. She loves making you smile. A family night out on the town is a must, but staying in and watching a movie is just as important.

2. She isn’t just your big but she is one of your best friends.
The best big-little relationships are ones that are friendships. My big not only knows how to be the best big in the world, but she also knows how to be the best friend in the world. She knows if you are upset and she knows if you are happy because she is truly your closest ally.

1. She loves you unconditionally.
If there is one thing I have learned from my big it is that she loves me no matter what. If I am having a bad day and not the nicest, she still loves me. If I am being obnoxious, she still smiles and gives me a loving hug. Her love never fails and her support never ceases. She has taught me so much, but the most important lesson she has taught me by far is that never-ending love and support is the best gift you can give to your little.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
