Lessons I Have Learned From Being A Podiatrist's Daughter

My dad has taught me many valuable lessons throughout my life, but some of the most important lessons stem from the dedication, hard work, the importance of education, and the significant support you must have for your family.

Here are just a few examples of how my dad has taught me to be a better person by being his daughter.

Dedication & hard work:

As a podiatrist my dad wakes up every morning at the crack of dawn to help people. His dedication to his work and his patients is incredible. He works long days, but always arrives back home for dinner. At my house dinner is a family meal and we are all expected to share in this special time and conversation. My dad always says, “If you want something you have to put the work in to get it.” He means that nothing is handed to you. You must be dedicated and passionate to achieve your goals.

The Importance of Education:

I have always been encouraged to learn as much as I can about the topics I am interested in. My parents are so supportive of my love of the arts and always say that I can be whatever I want to be. That is one of the best gifts I could have received from them. Knowing that my dad had to attend years and years of schooling to achieve his degree and expertise in medicine inspires me to keep gaining experience and knowledge of the topics I love. I learned that it doesn’t matter what career path I decide to take, I must first become educated in that area of knowledge. You know what they say, “knowledge is power.”

Family Support:

As I have mentioned before, I have always been a woman of the arts, competing in dance competitions, singing for showcases, and performing in musicals throughout my community. Not once have I ever looked into the audience and not seen my mom and dad cheering me on. My dad was always a “dance dad”. I mean, he sews people for a living, attaching a sequin onto my dance costume was a walk in the park! He is always there to give me pep talks and make me feel like my talents are worth being seen and heard. I will forever be grateful for that.

I just have to say thank you to my parents for always supporting me and loving my sister, Rachel and I unconditionally. I was extremely lucky to have been born into such an amazing family and cannot tell you enough how happy they make me.

These lessons that my dad has taught me through his work and experience will be instilled in me infinitely. I hope I can share these values and teach these same lessons when I have children of my own.

PS. My dad also teaches me to never lose my sense of humor and play.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
