Lessons From A Single Mom

There's no one stronger than a single parent.

Thank you, Mom.

Being a parent is not a simple task. It takes a countless amount of time, money, dedication and sacrifices. Running a two-parent household is tough, but it's even tougher when you're doing it alone.

Even from a young age, I realized things were different between my family and a "normal" family. Being young, I constantly questioned why my family was different and why every other family had a dad. As I grew up, I watched my friends celebrate Father's Day and talk about being a daddy's girl while I sat back not ever quite knowing what to say. Dads are supposed to be there for your first dance, scare the boys in your life, teach you to fish, go to daddy daughter dances and be an example. Not every family is blessed enough to have that, but I'm blessed to have a extraordinary single mother.

Being a single mom is one of the toughest challenges you have faced, but against all odds, you're a boss at it. I have watched you struggle and succeed throughout this crazy journey. You have taught me many lessons, and I still have so much to learn from you.

To be Strong.

You have taught me that life will not be easy. There will be times when you want to quit and it seems as if the whole world is against you. You have seen me fail and fall, but you have taught me to ALWAYS stand back up. You wipe my tears, tell me to be strong and try again.

Independent.

You always stressed the importance of being able to do things on my own. I do not need someone to help me through life; I am able to handle what life throws at me.

A single parent can do anything a two-parent household can do.

You have taught me that you can work while also coming to my recitals, musical programs, games, take me shopping, and anything a two parent household does. While you were busy, you never missed anything important to me.

Gender Roles are not real.

You shop, clean, repair, do laundry, work and much more. You have taught me you do not need a man to make your life whole. You are capable of doing it on your own.

Do the right thing.

Although you were busy, you raised me right. You have taught me right from wrong, to be kind, generous, loving, tough, to treat people with respect, to smile at everyone and other valuable life lessons.

Work hard, love harder.

As a single parent, you have supported me throughout my life without help from anyone. You supported us financially while also being a great mom. You taught me to work hard enough to be able to support yourself and your family, but never lose sight of your loved ones. Work, but also remember you are loved and that work is not everything.

Always rely on yourself.

This is one of the most important lessons you have taught me: always rely on yourself. People will say they will be there for you or will be there for the long run, but that is not a guarantee. People leave and people will hurt you, but you, yourself, will always be there. Do not rely on others for anything.

You're my best friend.

There is a special bond between a mother and a child. Yet, nothing compares to the bond you form with your single mom. When she is the only one you truly have in this world, the bond cannot even be described.

I love you, Mom.

Thank you.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
