The Legally Blondes Vs. The House Bunnies

The Legally Blondes Vs. The House Bunnies

There are every morning coffee drinkers vs. dedicated tea guzzlers, hard core partiers rocking the fist bump vs. content homebodies with their noses buried in a book, eccentric extroverts vs introspective introverts, creative, right-brain minds vs. logical, left-brain minds. And, so it goes.

Just as the list of dualities is endless, it is easy to point out the two types of sorority girls.

The first type are the girls who live and breathe rush, and had their snappy cas outfits completed as soon as they could waddle out of their bedazzled diapers. These girls don themselves in classic prep wear, remembering to always look pretty in pink and beautiful in bows. They knew the Greek alphabet before they knew the 26 letters in our own, as they are either the head of a generation of legacies or have always loved their gal pals and wanted to extend these friendships into strengthened sisterhoods in their twenties. I like to call these ladies the Legally Blondes.

Just like Elle Woods, these women are the picture perfect sorority girl. They don;t all have to be blonde, like their title, but ever since they hit high school, older girls have been telling them, “You definitely should rush once you get to college” or “You’re so totally a sorority girl,” and so on. These ladies might be defined as the “typical” sorority girl stereotype, but do not take this as a shot to the heart as there is more to them than their impeccable sense of fashion and flawless hair. Being this girl means you radiate elegance and style, you exude cheerfulness and class, and love being in your sorority as much as your heart loves to beat.

This category of sorority girls is fun, entertaining and, like Elle Woods, smarter than others think. These young ladies were probably involved in their high school pep rallies and attended all the football and basketball games with their favorite player’s number painted on their cheeks. They dress in Vineyard Vines, Lululemon, and Lilly Pulitzer and make sure that their lip gloss be poppin’ and their makeup is done to perfection. Beautiful, outgoing, and charming, these girls are constantly surrounded by their girlfriends, or sisters, and never miss a beat in the gossip circle. Every sorority is lucky to be filled with sisters in this category and, like Elle Woods once said, “It is with passion, courage of conviction, and strong sense of self that we take our next steps into the world, remembering that first impressions are not always correct.” So, do not underestimate these girls. Yes, at first glance they might seem like they match their stereotype, but there is more to every woman than meets the eye.

The second category of sorority girls is defined by the ladies who are beautiful, brilliant, and adore their sorority as much as the Legally Blondes. However, this fondness was not love at first sight, and it took time for them to adapt to the way of the Greeks. Recruitment was a blur and they most likely picked their outfits a week before. They finally caved and decided to sign up for rush. Joining Greek life was never in their four-year plan and, most likely, no one in their family had ever been involved in such a community. Either their mom was a proud GDI or their dad had little interest in becoming best buds with frat guys. So, joining the system was a shock to the world or people just didn’t picture her as the sorority sister type. I’ve named this type of sorority girl the House Bunnies.

Like the sisters of Zeta Alpha Zeta in the movie, these girls have probably heard comments od surprise that they don't fit the stereotype. These girls are not the Elle Woods or the Caseys from Greek. These girls are more like the Natalies from House Bunny or thebSydney Whites from Amanda Byne’s 2007 flick. Rushing and wearing letters was never really a dream, but has become their reality, and they love every second of it. Clapping and singing with a group of 100 sisters seemed a little odd at first, but now these girls are so comfortable belting out a chant that people are genuinely surprised that this girl has fallen so head over heels in love with her chapter.

This kind of sorority girl is a blast to hang out with -- genuine and, like Shelley Darlingson, has found a group of girls who love her more than she thought possible. These women probably hung out with a lot of dudes in high school or were never interested in uber girly things like glitter and romance novels. Yet, these girls are still gorgeous and present themselves with pride and dignity. Calling this girl not the typical sorority girl can be frustrating for them, at times, because they love throwing what they know whenever they get the chance and truly cherish their sisters. Although Greek life is not constantly on these ladies’ minds, it has become a huge part of who they are and they love rockin' out with their family and proudly wear their letters wherever they go.

Sometimes, it doesn’t make sense that these girls have become so intertwined in their sorority but, like Shelley has said, “Sometimes logic tells you to do something but you have to have a part of your heart as well.” They put their whole heart in their sorority and, just like the Legally Blondes, your chapter would not be complete without this type of sorority girl.

Together, the Legally Blondes and the House Bunnies define the two types of
sorority girls across the nation. Without them both, the balance of Greek life would be totally off. Whatever type of sorority girl you portray, you are lucky to be involved in something so amazing as the great tradition of Greek life.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
