Left-Handers Are Basically Unicorns, Which Is Why We Deserve Our Own International Holiday

August 13th is International Left-Handers Day. All of you right-handers may be thinking, "Why do THEY get their own day?" Seeing as only 10% of the human population is left-handed, and that the remaining 90% of right-handers have created a world that basically outcasts us lefties, we deserve our own day. In the spirit of the holiday, here are just a few of the disadvantages and advantages us lefties face everyday. Welcome to the world of being left-handed.

Disadvantages

1. Attempting to make it through class like everyone else.

Right-handers take for granted the fact that they can waltz up into their lecture hall and comfortably sit wherever they please. Left-handers, on the other hand, have to frantically search for a lefty desk, and, if none exist (which is the case the majority of the time), we have to become professional contortionists just to take our notes in our notebooks/binders. Which, thanks to the spirals and rings, makes taking notes with decent handwriting an ultimately impossible task.

2. Unintentionally transferring everything you write from the page to the side of your hand.

Nice writing with no smears? We don't know her. When you've been given the fate of being a lefty, your hand unavoidably rubs over everything you write. Not only does this give you one colorful hand, but you're also left with a smudged version of what was once supposed to be what you meant to write.

3. Being told you do everything backwards.

From your "backward" checkmarks to setting the table "wrong" lefties are always given grief for doing small day-to-day tasks the "opposite" way. Not to mention handshakes and getting an overdramatic sigh from a righty when they notice you moved the computer mouse to the left.

4. Having to associate with the enemy: scissors.

What's the quickest way to turn a lefty into a frustrated ball of emotions? Hand them a pair of scissors and tell them to go cut something. You're guaranteed a crumpled version of whatever was supposed to be cut, ragged edges, and most likely a few expletives. If you want a sequel, hand them a can opener.

5. Accidentally drinking out of someone else’s cup during every meal.

If you don't want us taking a swig out of your glass of water, you better keep it out of our reaching distance. Lefties have a habit of grabbing whatever is to their left without a second thought.

6. Elbow battles.

Whether you're sitting down to write or just eat, if a righty is sitting on your left (which they always seem to go out of their way to do), an elbow battle is inevitable.

7. Having to learn activities backwards.

Want to learn to knit, play guitar, or even just play catch? Lefties usually have to attempt to mirror whoever it is trying to teach them. As one can imagine, nine times out of ten this doesn't end well for the lefty OR the teacher.

8. Constantly having to answer, “How do you write like that?”

I don't know, Sherlock. How do you write with your right hand?

Advantages

1. We use both sides of our brain.

While right-handers stay biased to their left hemisphere, us lefties don't discriminate and treat both sides of our brain as equal partners. This is due to the need to survive in a world that is basically against us. Because of this, we enjoy some fascinating perks such as being able to recover from a stroke faster.

2. We’re better at using our non-dominant hand.

Many lefties have stories they can tell of being able to use their right hand for a variety of activities. We are by no means ambidextrous, but have you seen a righty use their left hand for anything lately? We didn't think so.

3. We're better drivers.

Left hand turns? No problem. Driver's test? With 57% of lefties passing the driver's test the first time compared to 47% of righties, there's no question who the real kings/queens of the roads are.

4. We’re more competitive.

While righties favor cooperation in a society (hence the reason why the majority of the population is right-handed), us lefties bring competition, and we're good at it too. Since the unexpected is favorable when it comes to winning, having a left-handed baseball player or throwing a left-handed punch throws off competitors.

5. We’re better thinkers.

We lefties excel at "divergent thinking" which means we are able to come up with multiple new ideas and solutions to problems. Is it a coincidence that four of the last seven presidents were left-handed? We think not.

6. We belong to a large class of incredible people.

Barack Obama, John F. Kennedy, Henry Ford, Mark Twain, Bill Gates, Michelangelo, Mozart, Beethoven, Marilyn Monroe, Babe Ruth. Must we go on? We won't, but click here to see more.

7. We get to enjoy being different.

We have to admit; it's fun straying from the normal. Getting weird looks as you casually go about your day just reminds you that you have a special skill most of the human population will never have. You're basically a unicorn in human form.

While it's no secret that we lefties have a fair share of obstacles in our every day lives, there's no denying that we wouldn't ever want it any other way. Sorry, right-handers.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
