4 Things No One Told You About Leaving College

Do you.

4 Things No One Told You About Leaving College
Carrie Saunders

I decided to leave. I decided to pick up everything I had built on a college campus; my reputation, my friendships, my organizations, everything and I left.

I had struggled with the decision for the whole time I had been at school. I had friends and I had stuff going. I wasn't lonely, I wasn't depressed, I wasn't unhappy. I was fine. But it just never clicked. I was always left wondering if I was where I really needed to be for the next four years.

So really in the most chaotic time of my freshmen year, I sat down and told my mom I wanted to change colleges.

I didn't know how much money I'd get to pay for school. I didn't know anyone where I was going. I didn't know if I would have a place to live. I didn't know anything. All I knew is that I was going.

After a team effort of transferring transcripts, touring a new school, applying for housing, creating a new schedule, and finalizing everything that needed to be done, I am now enrolled at a different university.

I'm not even there yet and I can just tell that it will be one of the best decisions I've ever made. Through working at church camps this summer I've already met so many people and built so many friendships.

I'm writing this to the person who is sitting around at home right now not completely jazzed about going back to college, for the person who is questioning if they are where they need to be, for the person who is scared to take the next step in what they know they want to do. YOU have to decide on your own what you are going to do and once you decide here are some things that may happen. They surely did for me.

1. Your friendships will change and that's okay.

When I sat down to tell my close friends that I was transferring, it changed things between us. It's not a bad thing. It's just a thing. The dynamics of my friendships have changed. I'm no longer going to see those college friends everyday, I'm not going to run to Little Rock with them every weekend, and I'm not going to know every little detail of their lives like I used to. It's just changed. That doesn't make us any less of friends. If anything it's made the limited time I have with them even sweeter because now time really is limited.

2. Not everyone is going to care that you're leaving and that's fine too.

Some people that you had a class with, that you waved to on the bridge, or chatted with in line at Chick won't even care that you're leaving to go somewhere else. They will notice that you have left but it's not going to effect their life in a huge way. And that's super fine. Not everyone at college had to be your BFF and now it's just even more evident.

3. You may not know people where you are going but you didn't freshmen year either.

What's the difference? Transferring is like freshmen year round 2... I don't know if that makes me want to throw up from nerves or pee from excitement. You managed to make friends that year, how is this going to be any different? If anything, you should probably be better at it this time around so get PUMPED.

4. It may be kinda scary right now to think about, but this could be the best decision of your life.

Transferring colleges can be scary and it can be intimidating and it can stress you out a little bit. But this could be the best decision you've ever made. This could be where you meet your lifelong best friend, you find your special place on campus, you meet your significant other. So YOLO. Do it.

Decide what you want. Remember this stuff. You do you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
