Every time the internet "drags" Demi, it's almost directly in response to something that could be contributed to her mental illness. Twitter likes to drag Demi every time she impulsively tweets something that causes drama. Every time she overreacts to something, somebody, somewhere, has something to say.
Well, I have something to say to you:
Shut up.
The most recent dragging stemmed from her comment on an artist's work where the drawing grossly misrepresented her body. Demi called the work gorgeous but critiqued the way it represented her. People immediately called her out for being ungrateful for her fan's hard work, as if Demi hasn't openly struggled with an eating disorder in the past. While I can't speak for Demi herself, since I, as well as many of my friends, have struggled with an eating disorder, I think it is safe to assume that any representation of our body that slims us down can be triggering, especially when it comes from someone who is supposed to love us, like a fan. Even if the artist did not intend for the message to be that Demi needs to be slimmer, that may be how it came across to her. Demi has worked openly about learning to love herself and to overcome her demons, so to have someone who is supposed to be a huge fan seemingly point out a major flaw - like her waist and her boobs being too big for her to be a mythical creature - could be very damaging. Even if the artist did not intend for the work to imply that Demi was not thin enough, that seems to be how it came across to her, me, and presumably a lot of people who have struggled with body image issues. The way the people who love us perceive us can very much influence how we view ourselves. Even having someone who care about us imply that we need to be thinner is very destructive, and can be very triggering.
I cannot tell you how sick and tired I am of seeing "Demi is pettier than a 12-year-old girl" tweets. Many of her impulsive tweeting sprees remind me of when I impulsively tweet. As a result of my bipolar disorder. A very severe, debilitating mental illness.
Reality Check: You can't claim to support people with mental illnesses and then jump ship as soon as they start showing symptoms. Sorry to disappoint your self-righteous bubble.
