Imagine you were starving and hadn’t eaten in days, and suddenly you happen to stumble upon a huge farm, but in your starved delusion, you kept on walking by. That makes no sense! Just as it makes no sense to not allow yourself to ask the question why. Asking why is crucial in many aspects of my life, spiritually, academically, and athletically. As a student, I have so many sources of wisdom surrounding me, parents, professors, pastors, and peers. Yet, if I never ask questions like ‘why’ the knowledge that is right in front of me is all for nothing.
Just as in our spiritual life, Jesus says in Mathew 7 “Ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” He is encouraging us to ask for specifics so that he can answer in specifics. Also, in James 4:2 “...you have not because you ask not.” There is so much intimacy and freedom that comes with the ability to ask God ‘why’. Why are you allowing this to happen to my family? Why haven't you given me a job? Why are you not blessing me financially? When you ask God questions it is so much easier to see his healing hand directly intervene. Asking God why is a major factor in my spiritual life.
Transitioning into the world of academia, asking why is such a crucial aspect of studying, teaching, and learning. Asking why not only helps the teacher but also helps me as a student to understand the material more thoroughly. I am in a higher level Spanish class right now and as I sit in class overwhelmed by the grace and knowledge that my classmates around me already portray my natural instinct is to sit in ignorance and try and wait out my class time so I can get on with my day, but why? Just because I don't understand the material right now does not make me stupid. I have to suck up my pride and shoot my professor an "SOS I really need some help!" This communication has to happen for me to learn how to be a better student and how to actually learn the material.
In addition, asking why is tremendously important transferring onto the volleyball court in numerous ways. From understanding how to improve my personal game, to improving holistically as a team. Asking why helps me understand the reason that I hit the ball out of bounds, or missed that obvious block. It propels the team in a positive way, rather than becoming upset and never understanding what the problem truly is. Asking why is a major part in being able to become an all-around athlete.
Asking why truly pertains to many aspects of my everyday life. Life is about compromise and learning from my mistakes. Being able to humbly ask why is something that is learned, because it’s not always easy to lay down my pride and accept that I was wrong. Whether it be spiritually, academically, or athletically asking why is a life long key that will only help me become a more intelligent and well-rounded individual.
