What I Have Learned So Far This Summer

What I Have Learned So Far This Summer

Here we are just a few weeks into the summer and I have found that I have already learned new things. I guess that when people tell you that you never stop learning, they really are not kidding. These are a few of the things that I have learned in the past few weeks.

1.You will probably always have a place at your parent's house.

That is as long as you are willing to go back to how things were before you were in college. If you did the dishes or took out the trash at home, be prepared to start doing them again. You are only there for a couple of months so do not complain too much. On the bright side, there is no rent, food and laundry are free, and you probably do not have a random roommate.

2. Re-watch an old movie or two.

When you were a child, you probably had a favorite movie and you probably watched it a lot. However, you may not have understood all the things that happened. I recently watched a movie that I have always liked. I had not seen it in awhile, so I figured I might as well. I picked up on life lessons I had never noticed before. I noticed the plot more and I understood it better.

3. Seeing people you used to know is strange.

I come from a small town, so I knew everyone in my graduating class. When we graduated, most of us went separate ways. Some kept in touch with each other and some did not. I ran into a few people I have not seen in the year that has passed since graduation. I learned that a year can change people. Heck, I know I have changed in the last year. Some people are exactly the same though which is still strange when you are different than you were last time they saw you.

4. The questions are the same.

During senior year of high school everyone asked me the same questions. Are you excited? What are you studying? Do you think it will be difficult? Do you think you will get a boyfriend? Are you ready?

I have found that the questions are pretty much the same after a year. Everyone wants to know how college is and if anything has changed since the last time they saw you. I get bored of answering the same questions over and over, but I do it anyway because I would rather the people hear my answers than assume their own.

5. Summer can get boring quickly.

I am only a few weeks into my summer break, but I am already getting bored of being home. This probably has something to do with the fact that I am not working this summer. This means I sleep, eat, clean(sometimes), and repeat. That gets old really quickly.

I am also missing my friends who have scattered to different parts of Minnesota and North Dakota that I will not see again until August.

You can bet I will start counting down the days until I leave by the time July hits.

6. Netflix can only entertain for so long.

This one kind of goes with the last one. Netflix can only entertain you for so long before it starts to get a little old. You may try switching shows or switching to movies or different genres. The fact is, eventually you will get bored and want to do something else.

7. The Internet is good.

This is a little gem of information I have always known, but I did not really think too much about until now. The Internet allows me to get in contact with everyone that I cannot see everyday. Whether that is through Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, or email, it does not matter. It is the knowledge that I have the power to do so that matters. I have found the Internet to be an invaluable source for communication.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
