Landing A Summer Internship As Told By Broad City

All of us college kids know how important it is to get the coveted "perfect internship" for the summer. It is something that is ingrained in your mind by your parents, advisors, and professors all your life, but it escalates once you hit college. You are told that you need to start as early as possible to get good skills and experience to put on your resume. We all want something to make ourselves stand out against the rest. It can be pretty intimidating. It can leave you with a lot of doubts, wondering if they will like you, if you are even qualified, or if you are good enough to be a functional part of the company. You want the company to have faith in you, but you also want a place that you feel good about working for.

The hit TV show, "Broad City," which follows the lives of two New Yorkers Abbi Abrams and Ilana Wexler, shows time and time again the difficulties of navigating the job market. It is very easy for us college kids to relate to these two that are attempting to find and maintain a career, just like we are trying to begin ours with an internship. They, like us, sometimes don't know exactly what they want, which is okay! It shows them searching for that perfect one, preparing to ace that interview (or at least trying to), taking defeat, and triumphantly finally getting a yes. All these stages of emotions and trial and errors they face, we face those same struggles and successes in the real world too. Getting an internship is a rollercoaster ride. You have to remember to stay positive and keep trying no matter how many times you are shut down. Eventually, the right match for you and the company will align if you keep at it!

Thinking about getting that perfect summer job:

But you refuse to apply to any because you are scared to be an adult.

You finally cave and apply to 20+ internships.

Checking your email a million times a day to see if you got an offer.

When you are trying to stay positive from all the rejection emails:

Or when they write back nice things about how great your resume was, but that someone else was better qualified for the position.

Finally getting an interview:

Preparing to sell yourself:

But then you see your competition ...

Your reaction when they ask a question you rehearsed all day:

But you actually answer like this:

And feel like you ruined any chance of getting it.

But you still have anxiety waiting to hear back from your favorite (or any).

When you finally get a job offer and make your parents proud:

But then you remember what having a job is actually like.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
