Over the past few weeks I've come across multiple articles shaming women because of the outfits they choose to wear. This one, for example, tells women to leave leggings and t-shirts behind and always dress like a 10.
Rachel, have you ever stopped to consider that I could feel like a 10 while wearing my Nike shorts and high school football shirt?
Because to me, being comfortable is far more important than looking like everyone else's version of a 10.
Let me make one thing clear: to go on a job interview or an important meeting, I won't be caught dead in a t-shirt. I'll dress appropriately for wherever I'm going.
But on a daily basis when I'm waking up before 8:00am, please don't expect everyone to take three showers, straighten their hair, do perfect makeup and have an ironed dress on for the day.
I've always been a huge advocate for "look good, feel good" but who on earth is to tell me that I don't look good? I feel comfortable and cute wearing some soffe shorts and a t-shirt. So why is anyone else trying to shame me for it?
I know what formal occasions are and I sure as hell know how to dress for them. But my 8:00am math class isn't a formal occasion and I'm not going to treat it like one. I'm going to get out of bed, put on whatever clothes I want and go to class. I might not even wear makeup! I know, how dare I! But believe it or not, I'd rather take an extra hour sleeping (beauty rest, if I may) than to get up at the crack of dawn to make sure you're happy with my appearance.
Instead of taking three showers and spending hours coming up with multiple potential outfit choices, I'll get ahead on homework, go to the gym and maybe even work my part time job for a while!
Please, Rachel, instead of finding any petty excuse to put other women down, build them up instead! When you see someone around who looks like they put minimal effort into their appearance, tell them how great they look!
My clothes, my makeup and my hair to not determine how beautiful I feel.
As we grow into women, we need to realize we should not be caring at all what other people think of us. If anyone wants to judge our makeup-less face and leggings, they clearly were never meant to be in our lives anyway.
So to the women who want to dress up every day, you do you! I'll keep being your cheerleader because you should never be shamed for dressing the way you feel most comfortable and beautiful.
To those of you who choose to wear leggings and a crew neck, I'm right there with you. You look beautiful no matter what you wear and I hope you feel that way too.
