When you hear the words "stretch marks," do you cringe? Yeah, me too. But in reality, they are inevitable because no matter what, your body is going to change as you age. Think of yourself as a passport and all the freckles, lines and marks are stamps of approval, proof you've gone on adventures, explored new places, and truly lived.
Stretch marks occur from pregnancy, puberty and rapid weight gain or loss, and can occur to anyone (yes, men, even you). There's only so many products you can apply, and all the creams and serums in the world won't completely erase the marks from your skin. So, there's only so much you can do.
To reiterate how common these marks are, two moms started the campaign #loveyourlines that picked up speed over the summer and is continuing to circulate through our news feeds. #Loveyourlines promotes body positivity and is teaching women to embrace the body they have — you only get one, why hate it? More importantly, why hate something about your body that's 100 percent natural and normal?
As this Buzzfeed article stated, "Showing — and embracing — your stretch marks is a way of fighting back against a culture that airbrushes away women's imperfections." These marks should not instill shame. They're like light streaming through rippled water ... they're beautiful.
Stretch marks are scars, and every scar tells a story. You know how when you were little, your parents would joke around about that one scar you felt ashamed of? "Just tell people you got attacked by a shark ... and won the fight!" they'd encourage. Despite their good intentions, there is no reason to twist the truth. If you got your stretch marks from pregnancy, you can proudly tell people that you housed a growing human in your body for nine months straight. You're a mother f*cking superstar, that's what you are. If you got your stretch marks from losing that 20 pounds, then hey, you earned those scars. You achieved something great — true story.
"Having stretch marks means that you have the ability to transform yourself, which is quite extraordinary," one Bustle article said. I couldn't agree more.
Check out the video below. People of all ages get stretch marks, it's true.
So, I'll embrace the "stretchies" I have not only because almost everyone has them or will get them at some point in his or her lifetime, but because they make me, me. May I remind you of that Natasha Bedingfield song we all tried to forget (this and "I've got a pocket, got a pocketful of sunshine")?
"Cause a face without freckles is like the sky without the stars.
Why waste a second, not loving who you are?"
Our girl had a point way back when. Embrace your "imperfections" because flesh without marks is like a canvas without paint strokes. Your "stretchies" are beautiful and so are mine. So, do me a favor and #loveyourlines.
