La Verne In Black & White:

Selection Eight: Juan

Part Eight:

This set of photographs display a close acquaintance of mine who is interesting with the world and the countries that are consisted within it. He is a person who enjoys the world of Japan and the multicultural aspects that Japan has with the overwhelming amount of activities and ideas. Juan is on the basketball team playing as a shooting guard with aspirations to be better than last year with mistakes that have to be corrected. As you will see throughout these photographs below, the amount of contemplation and thought on his past and what he has to do to overcome the adversity he has faced will be shown in these photographs.

Enjoy!

Photograph One: Gazing upon the campus of the University of La Verne, Juan begins the project with a wide shot to correlate with the worldly views that he seems to have.

Photograph Two: As night falls, the temperature becomes cooler and more relaxing with the winds flowing through the campus of the University of La Verne as Juan seems relaxed himself.

Photograph Three: With the overall night being comical and humorous, Juan takes a break to catch a breath and reflect on the experiences that he has had in his life thus far.

Photograph Four: Contemplating about the new year and what comes with it, he begins his journey towards the top on the basketball team in the University of La Verne.

Photograph Five: With a loving fascination for the Japanese culture, Juan builds on his love with his continuation of watching anime this year and searching for the perfect rotation of anime to watch.

Photograph Six: Feeling like a king in his own right, he piles the past mistakes from last year on his back and carries on with his second year at the University of La Verne.

Photograph Seven: Having aspirations to be on top of the conference for college basketball this season, Juan is looking to uplift his teammates and forget about past shortcomings.

Photograph Eight: With being on the basketball team, Juan needs an outlet other than the sport and he seems to be an avid anime watcher with his favorites being, “Naruto” and “Dragon Ball Z”.

Photograph Nine: Looking in the past and seeing those who doubted him and told him he would never be in the position that he is in today, he just reflects and frowns.

Photograph Ten: Desiring to the Tenth Hokage (from the anime, "Naruto") of the hidden leaf, Juan trains to be in that position to show those who doubted him from the beginning that his dream came true.

Words from Juan:

"This particular spot on campus is important to me because it is to me the most

beautiful spot of the campus. It's white roses are its most significant feature because

someone who was very close to me, they were very fond of them."

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
