They say behind every great man is an even greater woman. Let's take a look at the great women behind our presidential candidates.
1. First Lady Karen Kasich
Karen Kasich was born December, 1963 in Upper Arlington, Ohio. She attended The Ohio State University earning her Bachelor’s degree in Communication. Throughout the years she worked in healthcare, public relations and marketing before becoming the Vice President of GSW Worldwide, a healthcare advertising agency.
While working for a public relations firm, Karen met John Kasich and they soon married after in 1997. Karen now serves as a full-time mother to her and her husband’s twin daughters. Mrs. Kasich also now works as an ambassador for After-School All-Stars Ohio which serves to give at risk students a safe place for tutoring and mentoring while providing fitness activities.
2. First Lady Candy Carson
Born August, 1953, Candy grew up in Detroit, Michigan. After graduating high school she was awarded a scholarship and attended Yale University where she triple majored in music, psychology, pre-med. She then went on to earn her Master’s in business administration at John Hopkins’ Carey Business School. While attending Yale, Candy was a concert violinist and played for the Yale Symphony and Bach Society. Candy and Ben met in 1971 while both attending Yale and later married in 1975. Ben and Candy later went on to create the Carson Scholar Fund where, according to the Carson Scholars Fund history page, they award a $1,000 grant to students who exhibit both academic and humanitarian excellence.
3. First Lady Jane O’Meara Sanders
Jane O’Meara Sanders was born in October, 1950 in Brooklyn, New York. She attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville but later earned her Bachelor’s in social work at Goddard College. She then went on to earn her Doctorate in leadership studies in politics and education at Union Institute and University. Jane began her career working for the Juvenile Division of the Burlington Police Department as a Community Organizer with King Street Area Youth Center. In 2004, she was named president of Burlington College.
In 1981, Bernie and Julie met while Julie was attending his victory party for winning the election to become mayor of Burlington, Vermont.
4. First Lady Jeanette Dousdebes Rubio
Jeanette Dousdebes Rubio was born in December of 1973 in Florida, to Columbian Parents. After graduation high school, she went on to attend Miami Dade College. After college in 1997, she went on to become a Miami Dolphins Cheerleader.
She initially met Marco at the age of 17 where they attended the same high school and later started dating while she was cheering for the Miami Dolphins. She soon stopped cheering shortly after her marriage in 1998 and now devotes her time to their four children. Rubio is a devout Christian. She and her family regularly attend both a Roman Catholic Church and a Protestant Church. She also volunteers for Kristi’s House, which is an organization that helps youth in Miami who are victims of Human Trafficking.
5. First Lady Heidi Cruz
Heidi Cruz was born in August of 1972 in San Luis Obispo, California. She attended Claremont Mckenna College where she graduated with a degree in Economics and International Relations. In 1995, she received her Master's from Université Libre de Bruxelles in Brussels, Belgium, and she also earned her MBA from Harvard Business School. In 2003, Heidi worked for the Bush administration where she was under Condoleeza Rice. In 2005, she began working for Goldman Sachs and would soon become the Region Head in the Investment Management Division.
Heidi met Ted while working on the Bush campaign and they got married in 2001. She has suspended her work at Goldman Sachs to be her husband’s top fundraiser. According to MRT News, when asked about her role as a potential First Lady, Cruz commented stating that she wanted to “raise the standard of living for those at the bottom of the economic ladder in this country."
6. First Lady Melania Trump
Melania was born April, 1970 in Sevica, Slovenia. She initially attended the University of Ljublijana before dropping out at 19 years old to pursue her career in modeling full-time. Melania had a successful career in high fashion in Milan and Paris before moving to New York in 1996.
