I've come to realize something.
People aren't kind. I know that probably sounds terrible, but it's true. As humans, we tend to expect everyone to be nice to us because that's common courtesy, right? But that's exactly where we go wrong. We expect so much from others but can't give any of it ourselves. I've thought of a few ways to spread some kindness that take little to no effort. Seriously, if you want kindness, you gotta spread some first.
1. Compliment someone.
You wouldn't believe the reactions you'll get. People honest to God do not get compliments enough. If you like their glasses or think they are absolutely gorgeous, tell them. The smile on their face will be worth it.
2. Thank a crossing guard/janitor/etc.
Honestly, they don't hear it enough. Just because their job doesn't seem hard doesn't mean they shouldn't be appreciated. Let them know that they're doing a great job or that you really appreciate all the work they do. A simple "thank you" is enough.
3. Smile at someone/Say hello.
This can seriously make someone's day. I know that for me, it can completely turn a day around. Sometimes something as simple as a smile and a "Hi, how are you?" can go pretty far. Don't be afraid of thinking it'll be awkward. (We're promoting kindness here, remember? You can't go wrong.)
4. Hold the door open.
It's really simple but always appreciated by others. A small gesture can go a long way.
5. Tell someone you appreciate them.
How often do we actually do this? We may say "thank you" but that doesn't necessarily mean you're telling someone how much you appreciate everything they do.
6. Remind someone how amazing they are.
We are generally not as positive about ourselves as other people are. Boost someone's confidence. Tell them they're amazing. Tell them you believe in them. This can really affect the way someone feels about themselves.
7. Call someone and tell them you love them.
We get so caught up in life that we forget to tell our loved ones how much they mean to us and that we love them. All it takes is five minutes and you can make someone smile.
8. Write someone a handwritten letter.
Letters mean so much more than a text or a snapchat. Along with that, whoever receives the letter will be pleasantly surprised!
9. Donate your time.
Whether this means you're giving your time to your favorite organization, donating blood, or working a bake sale, donating something as precious as time is a great thing to do. It's always possible to find more money, but it's not possible to find more time.
10. Practice the "golden rule."
We learn this from day one in school and continue to learn it until the very end. If you want to receive kindness, give kindness.
My challenge to all of you this week is to spread kindness. If we want to see a better world and have a better place for future generations, it starts with us. If these ten ideas don't help you, I highly suggest either Google searching for some ideas (Random Acts of Kindness) or give the movie "Pay It Forward" (2000) a try. You won't regret it.
