On October 3rd, a mother of two was gagged, tied up and held at gunpoint in her bathroom while five men robbed her. She reported being scared for her life, terrified that she would be raped and killed and her two children left without a mother. When the news broke the next morning of the atrocity that had occurred, what was this woman met with? Ridicule, scorn, people telling her she was asking for it.
This woman was Kim Kardashian, I'm sure you've heard of her. Her name has been strung into millions of headlines, articles, facebook posts and tweets. Her and her family have made a name for themselves in the world of television, beauty, and fashion. Her marriage to Kanye West and two children, North and Saint, are international news any given day of the week. Everyone has heard, seen, or read about the Kardashians, and You either hate them or you love them. More often than not, the hate that people have for this name can make them forget some very important things. Having fame, money, and fortune does not disqualify these people from being real. They are actual human beings with families, friends, those who love and care for them and would be devastated if something happened to them.
The response to a women getting gagged a robbed should not be "She was asking for it", ever! No amount of cash should wipe away the fact that a heinous crime was committed. No amount of fame should vanquish the fact that rape is a very real threat for women everywhere. Trivializing an event that could have resulted in someone's death is not okay.
I will not say "It could have been your mother, or your sister or you!" Because someone safety and well being should not be justified by relating it to your own life. Kim Kardashian should have been given respect and sympathy because she is a human being; she is a woman who was attacked and then was met with jeers. Disgustingly enough, she has actually felt the need to state that she feels as if she brought this on herself by flaunting her wealth on social media, and will no longer keep herself or her fashion business in public eye as much.
This is a classic case of society victim blaming someone who has done nothing to deserve fearing for her life. Just because you don't like her, or agree with her values, or money, or TV shows, does not mean that she deserves to be robbed. Regardless of how you feel about her personally, she should still be able to live her life. It disappoints me that so many people responded in a negative way to this occurrence. No woman, anywhere, should ever have to apologize for fearing for her life.
