Just some thoughts about authority figures all around!

For me, I'm not a big fan of authority figures, I am especially not a fan of those that are yes-men/yes-women that give you flak for the simplest things. Rather than explaining themselves throughly on decisions that you question, they point you towards a manual and say: "You should've read it." I especially despise authority figures that clearly are hypocrites in the flesh (see: President-Elect Donald Trump, Paul Ryan, Ted Cruz, Anthony Weiner, Hillary Clinton, etc.). It just irks me that there are so many in power that are nothing like the common person, and once you speak your mind, you're not being listened to. You are just put back into place with the rest of the drones.

Unfair is the one word that describes these feelings. Injustice is another. I can go on and on about having no voice in this world, but there are shining lights, even in this vast emptiness. There are those that fight as the voice of the voiceless. You won't be hard pressed to find them.

Concerning that, Bernie Sanders is one of those lights. Elizabeth Warren is also in the same field. Senator Cory Booker can also join the same dialogue. All these movements popping up are about giving voices to the voiceless. Is it working? You're darn right it is.

Kicked off by the protests against George Zimmerman, the Black Lives Matter movements recently brought attention to, not only mistreated African Americans, but also mistreated people around the nation. It was their fervent activism that returned light to social issues around the country.

And what added fuel to that fire? The consistent mistreatment of the common people. From Mexican immigrants looking for a better life to Muslim Americans looking to live a normal life without scrutiny, it is a travesty that social equality still has to be fought for in an advanced nation such as ours. Even for such a great triumph as the passage of the Marriage Equality Act, there's still danger afloat.

Under the leadership of Vice President-Elect Mike Pence and recently announced Attorney General Jeff Sessions, LGBTQ rights are in more danger than ever before. Both of these men are notoriously anti-gay, with one wanting homosexuals to pray away the gay and one against "Don't ask, don't tell" repeal. I really don't understand how some paragraph from a fictional book can influence you on how to treat people. And these people are in power of the country. Go figure.

To add on to that, there's Steve Bannon in control, having Donald Trump's ear at anytime. A obvious white nationalist that clearly doesn't pander to any other race than white, Bannon is a big threat to everybody but white people. Authority figures are supposed to be in tune with those they control, but the only thing Bannon has control over is a website with as many conspiracy theories as Trump can spout out. Hillary is gonna take your guns! Mexicans are coming to kill you! There are secret messages in everything you read! Ted Cruz's dad killed JFK!

How this happened is beyond me. We have a yes-man that's eventually going to be in power surrounded by other yes-men that have no connections to the common whatsoever. They may say that they are draining the swamp, but it wouldn't surprise me if algae pops up all around the White House.

Only we as an activist can change things that are unfair, but it's hard to do that when there's no one there to listen to our causes. Talk all we want, type all we can, it'll amount to nothing when no one listens to the people.

Right now, is Donald Trump listening to the people? Are police actually the victims? Is the establishment going to disappear? Is there actually total equality in this country? Should authority figures be in control of how we think? Is there a reason to conform? Most of all, is everything fair in this country?

In case you're wondering, the answer to all of those questions is a resounding no.

Trump is not listening. Police aren't the victims. The establishment is not going to disappear. Total equality is not present in this country. The authority should not control how we think. There is no reason to conform. And no, everything is not fair in this country.

Yet, there is still a reason to fight. The people at the top, your bosses, your supervisor, the authority figures, whoever thinks they have control over you, just know that there is no reason to conform to their wishes. Fighting may be the only thing you're good at, but make sure that you're always fighting for what you believe in. And if there's one thing to take away from my musings, you've already read each letter.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
