Kettering University is without-a-doubt a school for: leaders, innovators and those with a strong desire to help others. What people don't know is how diverse our school really is. Recently, Kettering has added new majors to broaden their appeal. Kettering is not only an engineering school, but one for scientists, mathematicians and business people.
As a Biology major, I face statements such as: "This is an engineering school, why are you here?", or "Wow -- that's weird." This has created a disconnection on campus for those who are aspiring to do great things, but aren't encouraged to do so based on the "norm" of this school's reputation. This "norm" stems from Kettering University's reputation as General Motors Institute.
Before the name change, GMI was for powerful minds, born leaders and those who want to make a change in the world through engineering. Now, Kettering University is for powerful minds, born leaders and those who want to make a change in the world through science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The stereotypes that our university is solely for engineers is completely false and those of the less popular fields need to be noticed.
I love Kettering University seeing as it was my first choice school. My first year has been invigorating and hard, but I have learned a lot. Our school is a precious gem in a sea of universities that don't notice their students. Kettering always works hard to make every student feel comfortable and feel like they matter.
Now, all we need to do as a university is make sure that our STEM program is known and have the stereotypes of "GMI: Engineers only" a thing of the past and shoot for the future.
