With the recent Bernie Sanders win in New Hampshire for the Democratic candidate, the effectiveness of Hillary Clinton’s campaign is called into question. With her support steadily decreasing, Clinton must find another way to regain voters. Here are the pros and cons of Clinton’s campaign.
Pros
Clinton’s experience as the former First Lady as well as her career as the Secretary of State for President Obama adds to her qualification for presidency. As the spokesperson for women and supporter of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, Clinton continues to speak for equal rights.
Through advocacy, Clinton makes herself approachable and shows her passion for justice. This passion is clearly represented in her new campaign commercial where she states, “something is just fundamentally broken when African Americans are more likely to be arrested by police and sentenced to longer prison terms for doing the same thing that whites do.” Her honesty and confidence in confronting a controversial issue is appealing to voters who want a change in the future for society.
She also said it is time for “counter generations of neglect to face up the hard truth of injustice and systemic racism.” By targeting the black lives matter group directly, Clinton is giving an oppressed group a voice in politics. Her support gives hope to this population for a future change in legislation and the justice system. This approach undeniably shows her support for this population whose demands are usually avoided by politicians.
Cons
With the above commercial, Clinton separates herself from other candidates by specifically appealing to this population. Through this support, Clinton loses support from many police officers and union workers, due to the dangerous protests and riots that result from this group’s influence on the public. The acknowledgement of this group’s injustice is made, but the harmful acts of this group are never recognized. While her support is valued, this advertisement appeals to one audience and deters another group entirely so, is it worth gaining extra votes to risk losing supporters as well?
Another issue with her campaign is trust. After emails sent through a private server that contained information about Benghazi and other State Department matters were leaked, Clinton put a target directly on her back. With an investigation by the FBI on her record, her pure intentions for the common good are tainted as shown in the picture below. Her loyalty and honesty is questioned every day by citizens and will continue to remain the main factor in voting.
Part of Clinton’s platform is the appeal of a woman president. If Clinton is as much of a feminist as she proclaims, wouldn’t she want to be treated as an equal to her fellow male candidates? This concept is questioned as her campaign revolves around her gender. Feminism is equality between genders, not females over males. By promoting her gender, Clinton is essentially contradicting herself and her ideal of women earning the same rights as men.
Clinton continues to remain a strong candidate in the presidential race and the above reasons outline the successes and downfalls of her campaign. Will the results of the New Hampshire primary determine the rest of the primaries? Will Clinton’s new ad help or hinder her support? We’ll find out.
