Now that I am in my second year of college, I have seen that it can be difficult to keep in touch with your friends from home. The friendships that stay the strongest no matter how much you see each other are the ones where you both make the mutual effort to be in each other's lives. You don't necessarily have to talk every day to remain close. Here are some of the small efforts that I have experienced that help me to keep in touch with my friends.

Send each other posts on social media

I absolutely love when my friends send me posts on social media because it means that they were thinking about me in some way when they saw that post. It is also a good way to communicate with my friends even if we aren't directly talking every day.

Tell them when something reminds you of them

Having someone text or call you just to say that they saw, heard, or did something that reminded them of you is one of the best feelings ever. It shows how much they care about you and that they are thinking of you.

Or tell them about something you think they would like

Again, this is another simple way to show a friend that you are thinking about them. If you do something or discover something new that you think a friend would like, tell them!

Comment on each other's social media posts

Just a comment on a friend's social media posts reinforces your love and support for them, and it might also just make their day.

Try to facetime or call

Probably one of the most obvious ways that you can keep in touch with someone, but sometimes you don't even realize how much one short conversation or just seeing someone's face can make a difference.

Let them know when something important happens in your life

A great way to keep in touch is to make sure that your friends are updated on what is going on in your life. It also shows them that you care about them because you want them to know about the important parts in your life.

And keep up with events in their life

It is always heart-warming when someone remembers that you had an important event or day and they let you know that they were thinking about you during that time. It shows that they pay attention and are interested in what's going on in your life.

Just text them

Even if you don't have a lot of time, a quick text just letting someone know that you miss them or are thinking about them can mean the world and help you keep in touch with friends. I know that I am not always the best with texting my friends, but even just a short conversation makes me feel more connected to them.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
